Hi. I am 32 years old and I've been wearing braces for over 4 years now. I've noticed that one of the lower front tooth is moving forward and it seems as if the tooth will come out from the gums. I can almost see the bottom line of the tooth. The gums are descended that much. It almost looks like the tooth is tearing the gums apart.
I once pointed out the descended gums but my orthodontist just said " I know, it is fine" He is a man of good reputation in the field so I believed him. Now the condition has become worse and I am worried that I might loose the tooth. It is just a matter of time.
I paid nearly $6,000 for the teeth streightened and now I am about to loose one healthy tooth. Shouldn't he be responsible for it? Can I have him pay the fee for the gums reconstruction?
What can I do to prevent the worst result.
Please give me some advice....
Is it the orthodontist's fault? Recession gums/ tooth is being pulled forward too much.?
what I would do would have them take an xray of the area and compare to the original xray from when you started. This will give you an idea of what the bone support looked like to begin with. When you start orthodontics you probably signed a waiver saying that certain things may happen, as unlikely as they may be, sometimes they do happen such as bone loss, root resorption and what you may be describing. I would have a consultation with the doctor with the xrays and possibly consult a periodontist as well with the films. Don't get on the "lets sue" bandwagon until you know all the details and as a last resort. It may be able to be fixed without the legal route.
Oh yea, on a side-note....don't take advice from people who don't work in the field, there is a lot of bad advice out there just "based on their experience" A lot of people have braces on for many years for different reasons. Orthodontics is an art and a science. Its not a "cookie cutter" profession where every case is exactly the same. Just keep that in the back of your mind.

Calling all dentists, orthodontist, and the like!?
I want to become a dentist, orthodontist, or oral surgeon. When I enter college do I need to be enrolled in pre-dentistry or should/could I major in something else before I enter dental school? Are there any especially superb dental schools? What do you think I should keep in mind? Is there any specialization that I should look in to? Here is your chance to spill your guts and help someone. Please help me, I want to know everything! Thank you!
Calling all dentists, orthodontist, and the like!?
you need to register in dental school after your pre med. It takes 4 years %26amp; 1 year residency. After that what every subject you are intersted you can do your PG.
Reply:My dentist majored in chemistry as an undergraduate. It was a great fit for pre-dent because there is so much chemistry involved in dentistry.
UCLA has a great dental school.
Reply:The best thing to do is to shadow a couple of general dentists or specialists to understand what dentistry is all about. You do not need to be a pre-dentistry major. Most dental school prerequisites are similar to med schools so you can major in whatever you like as long as those required courses are taken. A good website is forums.studentdoctor.net and check out the pre-dental forum. Helped me a lot when I was in your shoes.

Can you change orthodontist half way through treatmeant?
I really really really hate my orthodontist hes so rough and doesnt really seem to like his job at all, my friend goes to one which is nice and much closer to me anyway, is it possible to swap even though ive had my brace for 4 months?
Can you change orthodontist half way through treatmeant?
Yes you can. Many people have to switch because they move while in treatment. You want to go where you are happy as you may be in treatment for many months to come.
However, it may effect and reduce you orthodontic benefits if there is insurance. So you may want to look into that.
Reply:Yes! I recommend it in your case for sure. Just don't change toilets in the middle of...ahh yeah. Orthodontist and toilets remind me of each other, sorry about that. I've got a fierce set of big white chompers, check em out! Errrrrrr!!!
Reply:yeah i think no problems.. i'm sure he can handle it..

Can i change orthodontist?
my orthodontist and his assistants are very nonchalant and they never speak. I just started the process and have a habit appliance in now. my ortho never gave me a treatment plan like sit down with me and tell me what will happen. the other day when i got the habit appliance in i had the sign the forms and I heard them talking about not having my records and they almost had me sign something with someone else's name on it. I don't know if they found my xrays but if they don't have those how could the doc have looked at them and determined if my teeth is strong enough for braces or if i needed teeth removed. I asked the assistant when I will get braces on she said in a couple of months. they happyely take my money but treat me like a number I want to change and get my down payment back befor I get braces which I don't know if i will ever get at teh rate they are going. Are all ortho offices like that. I always hear upset people especially parents is this normal or should i leave
Can i change orthodontist?
Yes, although you have to tell your old orthodontist taht you will be needing your records because your new orthodontist will need them. Here in the Philippines, it's ethically not allowed when a dentist continues a case without due permission or information.
Reply:You need to ask first the new orthodontist you want to goto if they will pick up where you left off and you need to ask your insurance carrier. Other then that you are free to do what you want.
As far as getting your money back - check if you signed a contract promising payment.
Reply:yes you can...all u need to do is loo it up in the phone book and make sure your health insureance accepts then as part of their plan or you will have to pay out of your own poket ...beleive me... i have braces and happy that my health insureance is paying for the one I moved to...lol
Reply:Hi,
Sounds like you got one of the bad apples! I would be flying out of his/her office with all of my records/X-rays/impressions ASAP! Plus, I would notify the Dental BOARD in your STATE of the misdeeds! You are well within your rights to seek out another orthodontist, and I mean FAST! I would also check the Dental Board in your State's Capital for any demerits, blemishes, suspensions, or any other type of action(s) taken against this weasel! LEAVE ASAP with all of your RECORDS -- you PAID for them ALREADY and they MUST, BY LAW give them to you (with a small copying fee sometimes) BY all means RUN to a REPUTABLE ORTHODONTIST!!!!!!!
Reply:I'm a dentist.
First off, quit your whining.
"Losing" x-rays is not a major problem as you'd have everyone on this forum believe. It takes us five minutes to get new x-rays on patients should the need arise.
If you feel you're being neglected, for God's sake, talk to the doctor! He's a reasonable person, and I'm sure he'd do whatever is necessary to treat you appropriately.
(I'm shocked to see that some ****** above me suggested that you file a complaint with the state's dental board over this problem. Some people just have a real chip on their shoulders when it comes to doctors, and are sue-happy bitches. People like that make us feel even more comfortable with charging an arm and a leg for our services).

How does the orthodontist fix me my braces?
In one week they are going to put me brackets above and below and i wanted to know everything what they are going to do to me since I feel in the armchair of the orthodontist.
Thank for your answers .
How does the orthodontist fix me my braces?
You meant the process of applying braces? Well they usually put a device in your mouth that widens and holds on your lips and cheeks back. They take a cotton swab and make your brace tooth dry, they mix this edible, cement like substance. They rub someone your teeth and put the bracket on. They then use ultraviolet ray gun to superheat the cement and make it stay. Its a sour taste. It doesn't hurt when its being done. Then they add the wire and put an elastic over the wire which ties to the bracket, the wires hook into these metal encasing around your molars.
Your moulds are a different story....
Reply:If I remember correctly, they make a mold of your teeth with a plaster like substance. Then they may put spacers between your teeth so they can put the brackets or band around the teeth on. Then they will put the front parts on. Both of these are done with a cement substance. Then they will thread the wire through, tighten it in the back and cut the ends off. It will be painful for a few days. Just remember, no gum, corn on the cob, etc.
Good luck

Orthodontist or orthodontist assistant/tech?
whats the difference? im interested in being one but im not quite sure.. can you give me details about the job and how to start your business and stuff like that?
Orthodontist or orthodontist assistant/tech?
Lucy, I believe that's plagiarism.
Reply:An orthodontist is the actual dentist who specialized in orthodontia. An orthodontist assistant is simply a dental assistant with orthodontic experience, or an assistant who chose to specialize in orthodontics. The assistant is the one who does most of the work, while the orthodontist simply checks the work and performs tasks that the assistant cannot. The assistants make far less money than the actual dentist. The way to get started is to get enrolled in dental assisting school. After that, you will have a clearer understanding of all aspects of this field and how to get started.

Calling all Orthodontist!....Figure 8?
Today my orthodontist said he was going to do a figure 8 on me today. What he did was take 2 wires and wrap them around the wire or something and then kept on twisting it.....but i was wandering what the point of that was....and what it did. (also...is it suppose to hurt?)
Thank You
Calling all Orthodontist!....Figure 8?
A figure-8 tie pulls the wire very tightly into the bracket. That, combined with a flexible wire will straighten out your rotated teeth.
Sometimes it will hurt a little more than usual because it is putting more pressure on the individual tooth than you are accustomed to.
Reply:A figure 8 is simply meant to hold the teeth in the position that they are. A steel ligature is used to do this, which is what your dentist twisted. Steel ligatures are stronger than elastic ties and are also used to move teeth when tied on each individual tooth but not when figure 8ed. Also no the figure 8 really does not hurt.

Is there orthodontist care on a sliding scale?
My daughter desperately needs braces, but we just can't afford it. I wonder if there is an orthodontist that will charge according to income.
Is there orthodontist care on a sliding scale?
NO UNFORTUNATELY NOT. PRICES FOR TREATMENT DONT TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION. BUT YOU CAN TRY A LOWER SOCIAL INCOME AREA AND GO TO AN ORTHY THERE THEY DO CHARGE LESS.
Reply:I don't know of any that charge according to income. Has she seen an orthodontist yet? If not, there are some that offer free consultations. Lots of orthodontists offer a monthly payment plan through their offer or you can go through a financing company to get a loan. Hope this helps.

About the orthodontist?
Iam goin to an orthodontist tomoro Iam worried!?
ok iam goin to my forst ortho apptment what will happen
ok do you have the choice of getting molarbands like can you say HOOKs intead?
I have one baby tooth left its my second last on the top
will i have to get it like cant they just brace the ADULT teeth?
and wait till it falls?
About the orthodontist?
You will not get braces on your first visit to the orthodontist. In fact, they won't do very much at all. They will probably take x-rays and pictures of your teeth. They will look at your teeth and decide what needs to be done. Most likely they will take a mold of you mouth so that they can get your braces ready. They might put rubber bands between your back teeth, but I seriously doubt that they will do it the first time you go. Don't worry about it. Everything will be okay. Your first visit isn't a big deal.
Reply:well my friend had to get braces when she still had a baby tooth and she had to get it removed. but another one of my friends had to get braces and had a baby tooth and they just put braces on the adult teeth...it just depends on ur ortho.
Reply:i had the same problem when i got braces and i ended up having the baby tooth pulled. it wasn't bad at all, so don't worry! anyways you'll end up having a pretty smile! :)

Is my Orthodontist weird or is it just me?
I just think its weird that almost everyone who goes into my Orthodontist office comes out with braces and headgear. I have it and it sucks. I don't understand why everyone needs it! I mean EVERYONE who goes to my ortho has it. I think its a waste of money!
Is my Orthodontist weird or is it just me?
I thought that headgear was a thing of the past! I mean some cases may need them but not like it was 10 years ago due to the evolution of dentistry. I do know that everyone that I have talked to with my Orthodontist has had to have their braces on longer than intended. I was told 10 months and here it is 14 months and I still have them. I do want them perfect though. Especially if I paid $2700.00 for them.
Reply:it's kinda weird but my ortho is like that too every single person from my ortho gets the same exact treatment brackets on every tooth then rubber bands streched over 2 brackets. teh total price is 3600...
Reply:maybe it's just your idea..maybe you should get another opinion from another orthodontist
Reply:He' s not weird, he's just an orthodontist. He probably tells everyone they need braces - why? Because then he gets MONEY!
The other reason everyone at your orthodontist has braces and headgear could be that they are at an orthodontist. Word on the street is that's wear you get braces.
Reply:ortho means corrective and dontist refers to dentition, or teeth. you need braces and head gear for corrective dentistry. most people who see an orthodontist already know they need this. someone with a perfect smile is not going to make an appointment. your orthodontist is not weird, it's you.

Toothpick at Orthodontist?
This might be a silly question, but the last two times I have visited my orthodontist, they have put this toothpick that had a red tip and a blue tip in my mouth and then on my wire. Why the heck do they do that? Whats this toothpick all about??
Toothpick at Orthodontist?
It is used to mark on the wire where it was placed. For instance, they may mark the on the wire where the center of your teeth should be, where teeth may meet, any odd overlaps, or anything else they may need to take note of. That way, when the doctor takes the wire out of your mouth, he can make the appropriate bends and adjustments to your wire in the right places and then put it back correctly.
Reply:the red/blue tip is an anesthetizing substance...

When an orthodontist says?
Before you get braces on, like when they tell you to set up the appointments to get teeth pulled, if the assistant of the orthodontist says you will probably need braces for a year, is this accurate, or just a guess?????
When an orthodontist says?
dont take they word serious.they told me that I need 2-3 years of treatment and now its 6 years that I have braces.
about extracting some teeth:its a part of orthodontic therapy in some cases, in order to push the other teeth backward in the mouth.for example in people that their teeth and lips are so protrude(we call it bi maxillary protrusion in dental texts).
like most of the black people.
or when they arent enough space in mouth for all the teeth so the dentist choose 1-2 or 4 teeth to be pulles in 1 or both jaws to align other teeth.
Reply:i had 2 get teeth pulled to make room in my mouth (I think ihad 2 much room and wuz crowded)
Now, currently, i do have braces
Reply:Probably pretty accurate depending on the amount of time it will actually take to correct the problem, in some cases it is longer.
Reply:It's pretty accurate because they know approximately how long it will take based on the number of other patients they've seen go through it.
Reply:Completely guessing. True, they may be able to make a good estimate, but until they see your progress, they have no way of guaranteeing that. There's no way to put an accurate time frame on something like that, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. If it does only take a year, you're luckier than most. It also depends on how much work you need. If you're teeth aren't that bad, then it very well could take a year or less. There's no definites with braces.
Reply:It is a guess. They can't know for certain until they see how you progress.
Reply:It's pretty accurate.
Reply:when i needed braces they pulled out 4 teeth,BUT THATS BCZ I HAD THEM REALLY CROOKED.trust me.my health teacher said that every time they say the amount of year, your goin to have them onother extra year. For example: if they tell you one year it means 2 years. Its true bcz they told me i would have them 2 years and i had them for 3 years. The same story happened to all my friends.
Reply:I assume that the assistant read something on the chart and did not guess. Why would she? Whenever I send someone to the orthodontist, I get a letter back and it ALWAYS has an estimated treatment time. This is routine and it must also be written in the chart.
Reply:Yes, this is very accurate. They have scean a lot of mouths and they know how long it takes to get them off.
Reply:A guess. Braces could go 6 months either side of the estimate.

Pediatrician or orthodontist?
I took an online test to see what career suites me and from my results I really liked the pediatrician and orthodontist careers, but I am not sure which is better.. do you have any sudgestions?..like which career pays more or works more hours.. stuff like that...
Pediatrician or orthodontist?
Which is better verses pays better?
Hmmm,
the Orthodontist has the highest suicide of any professional and the pediatrician has the highest liability insurance costs of all medical professions.
Causing Pain in the mouth and the related stress verses rarely but the reality of seeing babies die.
As a nurse, none of my high tech babies ever died but it is something doctors see a lot of in time.
And time..you will be working 16 to 18 hour days and every other weekend as a doc. You will be on call several nights a week.
If you are a doctor, you are always a doctor, 24 hours a day. People don't 911 their dentist. Even if you break a tooth after hours, we will see you at the hospital usually.
You have a very hard decision to make.
There are more important things than money.
All of the above are great answers. Feed them into the free Choose It program you will find half way down the page on the site below. It is a decision matrix tool for such questions.
If you want time off and less pressure, go elsewhere. If you are committed and love people, follow your heart.
Reply:both are good pay and career. use head or tail method
Reply:That depends. A Pediatrician is a medical doctor, and an Orthodontist is a Dental doctor. In order to become a Pediatician, you need the following training:
- 4 years Bachelor degree
- 4 years medical school
- 3 years Pediatrics residency
In order to become an Orthondotist, you need:
- 4 years Bachelor degree
- 4 years dental school
- 2 years Orthodontics residency
With Pediatrics you'll be treating kids, orthodontics you can treat everyone.
The thing is, Medical doctors (MD) have alot more prestige then Orthodontics, and the pay will probably be better. Orthodontics have better hours (usually 9-5) but Pediatricians usually have better pay.

if you like kids, then go with pediatrician.
if you like teeth, then go with orthodontist. they usually get a lot from 1 patient but there's no gurantee on how many patients they can receive. pediatricians usually get a lot more business. depends on where you work at or whether u open up your own clinic

Pediatricians
A pediatrician is a physician who specializes in the care of children and the treatment of children\'s ailments. Pediatricians must go to college and medical school like all other physicians. They must then do an internship and residency at a hospital, also like other doctors. However, after their training is complete and they become doctors, they study pediatrics, the study of children\'s diseases and ailments. A large part of a pediatrician\'s job is to educate parents about their children\'s health and to help them deal with behavioral issues that may have little to do with illness. Both you and your child need to be able to trust and feel comfortable with the person you choose. So in addition to finding a doctor who is a good clinician, it\'s important for you to find a person you and your children are comfortable with.
Reply:Both careers are great, they are very rewarding and very hard to achieve and keep. You can also take in mind what are the requirements of schooling.. usually medicine is longer than dentistry, and to get to a med school is harder than dental school. Also when you graduate the interships for MD are longer than for dentists, insurance is more expensive for MDs as I have heard, also I heard dentistry is cheaper... But anyways if you really dont know for sure, what you should do is try to volunteer with the patients, I was in the same ordeal, but after I volunteer I found out what I really did want to be. Good luck deciding ^^

Problem with orthodontist?
ok so i got my top braces (damon) on in january. and i usually went once a month usually around the 10th-12th. but the last time i went was may 12th and i was supposed to get my bottom ones on in june, but recently my orthodontist got kidney cancer and they are trying to find a replacement. and i want to know since i havent seen him in a couple of months will that mess up my schedule for when they come off?
Problem with orthodontist?
yeah it will, unless u get a new orthodonist.
Reply:It probably will, since you never got the bottom ones on.
Reply:First of all....it is hard to say if you will have to have the bottom ones on longer or not (depends on your teeth) Not seeing your orthodontist as scheduled will effect your treatment time. If you have an overbite then you really need to get the bottom ones on. You do not have to wait until another orthodontist takes his place all you have to do is call another orthodontist in your area and let them know the situation and they can request your records and they can put your bottom ones on and continue your treatment and any money that you have with the old orthodontist will be transfered over to your new one to finish treatment. If you have any more questions please send me a message.

Does the orthodontist want to pull out all of my baby teeth?
my orthodontist told me only four teeth will be pulled, but i have 6 baby teeth. chances are he will remove 4 baby teeth. so, what about the 2 other baby teeth? will i have them while wearing braces?
by the way, i'm 15 going to 16 in a month.
Does the orthodontist want to pull out all of my baby teeth?
best way to know is to ask him
Reply:at that age they should all have fallen out years ago m8, they have to all go
Reply:Perhaps the orthodontist is using the other two as space maintainers - to help keep the shape of your jaws while the treatment takes place.
Sometimes baby teeth will not fall out and the permanent teeth will grow in around them and cause a big orthodontic mess!
Sometimes the permanent teeth never come in and the baby teeth remain.
That may be what is happening in your case. You really need to ask him/her about what's going on in your jaw. Only your orthodontist can give you a detailed explanation.

Autistic specialist? orthodontist?
hey all, i got a problem,
i want to be a dentist and maybe go on to be an orthodontist.
but my parents think its a bad job for me and they want me to enter into the autistic specialist.
can some one give me good facts about both jobs and which u will choose and y
plz and ty
Autistic specialist? orthodontist?
Working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), which is the politically correct way of saying it, isn't as rosy as some of the other answers would lead you to believe. It's NOT the kids that are the problem, it's the parents. Just be prepared to be constantly sued when 4 year-old Johnny has 175 goals on his IEP and only meets 174 of them. Parents are totally unrealistic when it comes to this. There is no cure for ASD. Through therapy, children with ASD can recover to a certain extent, depending on the severity of ASD.
Working with the kids was great, even the ones who hit me, but I had to leave because I came to the conclusion it was the parents who really had the ASD, not the kids. If parents would just let people help their kids without demanding that Johnny be cured in a week, it would work so much better for everyone involved. When parents become adversarial about every little thing, the child is the one who suffers. If you think you can put up with overbearing parents and their lawyers, then go for it. Otherwise, stick to dentistry.
Reply:Well Some Autistic People is not able to do work like that.
Cause it depends on what you want to do, and how you do it.
You need to show your parents that you can do those jobs, and they may have a second opinion on that.
Reply:This is when you have to be a grown up and decide for yourself what you want to do wth your life. If your heart isnt in to working with people with autism then dont do it. Who is to say you couldnt become a dentist or orhtodontist that takes on special needs clients?
Reply:Why can't you do both? You can be an orthodontist in your professional life. In your "down" time you can volunteer with children who have autism and their families.
I have a masters degree in Autism and Severely Emotionally Disturbed. I make the same as a teacher without a masters degree. Health insurance is so expensive I can't have my husband on my policy with me. I'm not sure what I'll do when I need to add a child to the policy.
The time I spend with my students is very special to me and I love it without a doubt. Sometimes I wonder how my life would be different if I had gone into business administration.
You don't have to choose one or the other when it comes down to it, you just have to make time for all of your passions in life.
Reply:Well, not all autistic children are the same. So, even though you like the one autistic child doesn't mean you'll like them all, unless there are autistic traits that you enjoy about him.
Reply:do what you need to do- you are the one that will be doing the schooling and job for the rest of your life
Reply:Here's a thought - become a pediatric dentist/orthodonist. Then you can do both :-). My daughter has autism and cerebral palsy and needs pediatric specialists for all her medical needs. Ped dentists are in HIGH demand. Finding a good one is hard for parents. I refuse to go to the one in our new city - and the nearest one is three hours away.
You need to stand up on your own two feet and do what you want to - your parents shouldn't push you.
Reply:You really need to follow your heart--you will be the best at what you do when it's what YOU want to do. Explore several careers related to dentistry and working with children. As several people suggested in their answers, you might be able to combine your interests by specializing in pediatric dentistry. If you are young and just starting college, I advise keeping all your options open for a little while until you see what really pulls you.

Braces and orthodontist visit?
I am going to my first orthodontist appointment on tuesday the 18th. I am wondering what they do at the first appointment and how long after that I will get braces. Please respond thanks.
Ps. what color braces should i get, blue or pink? if blue is every blue the same because some blue braces look icy and I like the icy ones. thanks.
Braces and orthodontist visit?
On ur first visit the dr. will talk to you.. and take a look at your teeth. Tell you what you will actually need. He may suggest something other than braces, like a retainer or Invisalign
The second visit, he will take impressions of your teeth. and x-rays to prepare for your treatment. Insurance issues will be dealth with usually around this time... if not before.
The third (usually) appointment you will get your braces/retainer or whatever it is you need.
The length of time it takes between appointments just depends on how busy the dental office is that you are going to.
Alot of patients prefer clear braces. But the colour is totally up to you.. the elastics will be chaned every couple weeks. so you can try out as many colours as you like. Pink and blue.
I hope this helps you.
:)
Reply:you should get pink!
Please answer my question!

Reply:Pretty sure that he will take a mold of your teeth the first time.
Reply:The first appt is usually a consultation - they may not do anything but discuss what their plan is. They might combine that visit and take an impression of your mouth so they know how to treat your situation.
Reply:if you will be getting braces, maybe they will talk to you and take mold impressions of your teeth. the dr. will do his stuff after you leave in order to get the braces that fit the best. you might need to get teeth pulled out. get spacers.
for color braces. u might get the normal single color bands and/or the power chain ones.. the power chain ones give pressure to the teeth in order they move in.
hopefully, a dentist will stop by to read this question and write professional information.
Reply:the first consultation is just talkin about what there going to do and taking imprint of your teeth which sucks when they pull them out of your mouth then after that you should schedual anouther appointment to have them put on! You should get blue but diffrent orthodonist have different colors then what you see on other people unless they go to the place you go! Good Luck!
Reply:hi. i have braces and at the first appt. it is a consultaion. next appt. is the records visit. where you get all the x rays done and the molds of your teeth. they also did my braces that very same day. it took a while to put them on. god what a difference they make though. you will be amazed at how great you teeth will look! good luck :)
Reply:metalic blue looks good
Reply:my daughter got braces 2 weeks ago and when she went at first they just checked over her teeth and when they finally decided she needed braces, she went back and they put them on. She has two colors, blue, which is a light ice blue, and purple. She had them alternate the colors.
Reply:the first appointment they let you know what your problem is because your dentist shouldve sent them the xrays. they may take a mold of your teeth with like this puddy that leaves a weird taste. they may also take an xray themselves. i like the blues better because i guess cuz im a guy.
Reply:the icy blue is probably like the light blue. it looks icy! and good. i have braces right now. dont worry about anything. its fine. and silver is the best color! i know its plain but it looks good. or teal, which i have right now. also you can ask them to give you rainbow or 2 or 3 different colors.
usually the length of time that most people have braces are around 1- 4 years. but most of time it is around 1 or 2 years that a person has them on. you should ask them at your orthodontist office about braces and how long, what for, etc. you have them. But when you get them, they will probably tell you all the information.
At the first appointment, they will probably just give you your braces, and it shouldnt hurt too much. Don't be scared. They make your teeth look pretty afterward! =)
Good Luck!
Reply:mine took 2 hours. get blue
Reply:it depends.
when i went the first time,
they said i needed to lose more teeth,
so then i came back in three months,
then they made molds and all that stuff,
and they put the braces on THAT DAY,
but sometimes there can be up to three appointments before they actually put the braces on.
and i love the colors pick and orange together,

but you can look here to see what colors look good together.

My question is, will the orthodontist stick with his timeline, or adjust it accordingly to my concerns/ current state of my mouth?

Should my orthodontist be changing the wire on my tracks?
I've had braces (tracks) for nearly 6 months now, and my orthodontist has not changed the wire once.. is she supposed to??
Should my orthodontist be changing the wire on my tracks?
don't worry about it
everyones experience with braces are different many people go through many arch wires
but an orthodontist will not change your wire if it is doing its job
are your teeth already pretty straight and much movement isn't needed if soo the first arch wire will doo its job for a long time
or if your teeth are very bad they may still need the first wire till teeth have move a bit more before a thicker wire can be used
if you are concenered about it though simply ask your ortho why your wire hasn't been changed and am sure she/he will be happy too answer it =]
xxxxxxxx
Reply:Probably not. Wires are changed when some kind of change in movement is needed. For example, things are not progressing as she would expect. That might mean a heavier wire is needed. Also, maybe one type of movement is needed initially (say, a tooth needs to be erupted more), so maybe a round wire is used. Then, because that movement has occurred, now a different movement is needed (like rotating a tooth so it's oriented properly). Maybe now a square wire is needed.
The point is that she would've changed it had she needed to. Your teeth are likely moving in the directions she wants.
Reply:As far as I can remember, the wires don't get changed-they get tightened. The only need for changing them would be if the wires were broken.

Is an orthodontist's job gory?
Does an orthodontist see blood and do implants aswell as surgeries like a dentist?
Is an orthodontist's job gory?
I'm not an orthodontist but I've had braces for many years which means I've been around one. :) I can tell you that they do see blood, like when they need to pull out teeth. There can also be blood when they clean your teeth with the sharp, metal stick (don't know what it's called). They do seem to do minor surgery sometimes but I don't know if that's common. It doesn't seem like it. I just remember my friend had to get stitches for something small. As for implants, I have no idea. You'll probably get better answers if you ask again during the daytime, or the opposite of whenever you're asking now. :)
Reply:Orthodontists probably have the least "gory" job compared to other dental specialists. No, they don't usually do implants or other surgeries, those types of procedures are usually performed by oral surgeons, periodontists, or endodontists.
But orthodontists know how to put the right traction on teeth to gradually bring them into place, they are incredible engineers! When I had braces, I followed all of my doc's instructions and had much better results than even he had predicted.
Reply:No. They don't .

Will my orthodontist shape my front teeth? Please advise!?
When my teeth were crooked, my front teeth, on the top and bottom I guess, rubbed together at the bottom and top edges. So, the bottom of my front upper left tooth has a small corner missing from it, and some of my bottom teeth don't have perfectly stragith edges either. I can only notice it now that my teeth are straight and my crossbite isn't covering it up. I get my braces off soon. Will my orthodontist, like, shave the edges so that they my teeth are perfect? Or, is this something that I would have to get done at my regular dentist? Should I get bonding done? Please advise!
Will my orthodontist shape my front teeth? Please advise!?
yes mine did that to me. it doesnt hurt. it tickled to me and felt really weird after words, but if he dosnt then you can ask
Reply:i'm glad everything went well Report It
Reply:I don't think the orthodontist will. When I got my braces removed my orthodontist didn't do anything extra to my teeth. I am fortunate enough to have teeth that are pretty much all the same length and not chipped. I am sure it is something that would have to be paid for separate and that you would need to discuss with your regular dentist.
Reply:Normally that's something your regular dentist would do, not the orthodontist... How badly chipped are they? If the edges are very uneven and/or chipped, the dentist might not be able to fix them by just shaving off the edges without taking off alot of tooth structure, in that case they will probably want to do bonding.
I would talk to your regular dentist about all that, the orthodontist definitely won't do bonding as I'm sure you know so your regular dentist can go over your options with you and tell you what will look the best.
If you do get bonding though, if you want to whiten your teeth at any point do it before the bonding because bonding doesn't whiten
Reply:I think this is something your regular dentist will have to take care of...unless your regular dentist is your orthodontist! Then you can get both done by the same person. In my case, I had seperate doctors for both so I'd have to have the dental stuff done seperately.
Reply:orthodontists do not shape teeth. make an appointment with your dentist to have him take a look. he may or may not recommend bonding. hint: if you want to whiten your teeth, ask your dentist how long you should wait to whiten your teeth, then whiten them before you get bonding if that is what he recommends. bonding will not whiten.

Would an orthodontist office be open MLK day (tomorrow)?
Anyone know? I know state businesses are closed, but what about an orthodontist office? I would assume doctor's offices would be open, but what about stuff like orthos, dentists, vets, etc.? I just got a new retainer last week, and it's not fitting well. I want to get it in ASAP to be worked on...
Would an orthodontist office be open MLK day (tomorrow)?
Yeah, usually.
Reply:most will be open
Reply:Mine is open and I go tomorrow, so I assume yes.

Before I call my old orthodontist... What do you do when your retainer wears out years later?
My last orthodontist appointment was 3 years ago. They told me wear my retainers a few times a week for the "rest of my life" and then sent me on my way....
But now they are kind of worn out, falling out when I put them in.. I don't want to stop wearing them every once in awhile because they are still useful.. do you think the orthodontist would still have my files and such?
I guess i"ll call them one of these days...

Yea..I think your orthodontist still have your info. Just call them and find out. I doubt that they would throw them out that fast. The info could then be easily transfered to your new doctor. The reason why ur retainer falls out is because your teeth moved and dont fit the retainer anymore...anyway..lol good luck!

Being an Orthodontist/ Dentist?
I am a highschool sophomore and have been extremely interested in becoming an orthodontist or dentist for a very long time. What are some important qualities I should have and what kind of classes should I take in highschool to prepare myself if I should take up this career?
Being an Orthodontist/ Dentist?
You need to have the desire and ability to work with and help people. You need to be caring and compassionate, with a desire to work hard and learn lots.
Dentistry is a great profession. Most of us set our own hours, own our own businesses and have our destiny on our hands. Dental school is expensive and difficult. Loans are available and the work can be done if you have the desire and discipline. Running a dental practice is stressful and expensive, but if you are willing to work hard and help your neighbors, it is very rewarding.
Go to the American Dental Association website. (www.ada.org) There is a page with links to all the schools in the US. Contact them to determine their requirements. You should also contact your undergraduate University to determine the requirements that you will need from High school to attend their programs. The ADA also should be able to direct you to literature to help you learn about the profession.
One big suggestion that helped me was visiting and spending time with my dentist. Spend a few days there, see what s/he does on a daily basis. It will help a lot to learn about dentistry (and it will look good on your application).

CALLING ALL ORTHODONTIST/DENTISTs!!!!!!!!?
I had an underbite and the orthodontist fixed it, then they put in braces to bring my teeth together, and then they gave me a retainer for my upper and lower jaw, if i don't wear those retainers, will my underbite come back, or will my teeth get messed up?
What if i only wear my top retainer, will my underbite come back?
CALLING ALL ORTHODONTIST/DENTISTs!!!!!!!!?
wear the whole thing
You don't want to be like me.
I outgrew all of that good stuff. So then they performed a surgery on me, when I was 19.
You don't want your mouth cut apart by a sawzall. Believe me.
Reply:Good grief, you just asked this.
Reply:wear them all the time until your ortho says otherwise because your teeth havent fixed in place properly and it might come back, dont worry after a while you will only have to wear them at nights and thats a lot better.
just remember KEEP WEARIN THEM

Can I have a different orthodontist fit me for a retainer than the person who did my braces? (I am moving )?
I am moving countries so I need to have a different orthodontist fit me for a retainer. I am getting my braces taken off in Korea, but hopefully I will get my retainer adjusted in the states. Any advice? How much would it cost? (I have already paid 5,600 here, though I know that doesn't matter when I meet with the second orthodontist. Thanks

If your ready for a retainer then yeah, probably. THey might just transfer you. The money situation I don't know much about that because you already paid the money up front and you aren't making payments.

Will an orthodontist get few of my teeth before i get braces?
i'm just curious about this...beacause im planning to get braces after i turn 15 and i'm a little bit nervous because some says that the orthodontist gets two teeth from corner to corner before they put the braces on...
Will an orthodontist get few of my teeth before i get braces?
i had braces and i had to have 4 teeth pulled before having them put on. they're called the "eye" teeth. but not everyone have them. braces are very worth it in the end! i couldn't imagine not having my straight teeth!
Reply:i wear braces and i had to take 2 teeth out.
it was painful but dont worry.
you'll get over it.
Reply:yh they do so the braces will have spaces to move as they were crowded before. i also had to get 4 of my teeth taken out which i found quite painful but worth it.
Reply:It depends on the sort of problem you have. Some problems can be sorted out without extractions. But if the orthodontist needs a lot of space to sort out things like crowding, then you will need to have teeth out.

Will the orthodontist take my braces off if I ask him/her to?
I have had braces for six years now and they really irrate my mouth. I want to go ask the orthodontist to take them off, but my parents say "No, we have to sign something".
Will the orthodontist take my braces off if I ask him/her to?
i say its best to just keep them on. you only need them for like ayear so your already half way there. another 6 months and its done. apparently if you take them off before its over then your teeth dont stay where they are but gradually move so in the long run you wont actually end up with straight teeth. you could ask your arthodontist though.
Reply:six years is quite a bit. unless u want the results, u should leave them on. but if your getting like rashes inside your mouth, u should definetly try a different ortho or just talk with the one u have.
Reply:Your orthodontist will not take them out until your treatment is complete.

How do I become an Orthodontist?
I am a High School senior, and aspiring orthodontist. I would like to know the exact stages of education I would have to go through, and the types of schools/programs I'll have to attend. I also want to know how do most orthodontist start off their career.
How do I become an Orthodontist?
1) 4 years of undergrad, must take DAT exam, get some dental experience, apply, interview and get into dental school
2) 3-4 years of dental school
3) 2-4 years of orthodontics training or residency
4) Now you can practice by yourself!
Reply:You will have to go to college and then probably a dental school that specializes in orthodontics!

I'm going to the orthodontist tomorrow with my mum for a general checkup. i've had my retainer for about..
three months and i just wondered tomorrow will i see the actual orthodontist or one of the nurses. when i was first given my retainer i did see a nurse, not the orthodontist so i'm just wondering about this time. I'm fifteen if that counts for anything.

you might see the ortho so he or she can check your progress. that's how all check ups were for me, the only time an assistant or nurse was with me was to take x-rays or molds.
Reply:well i have braces and i go to the orthodontist once a month and i see my orthodontist EVERY time i go.

Should I have the orthodontist put an extender in my 15 year olds upper teeth?
We took him to two different orthodontist for a consultation. One recommends doing an extender first and then braces. If the extender doesn't work we may need to talk about pulling teeth. The other orthodontist just recommended braces only and never mentioned maybe needing to pull teeth. The first one said the extender helps so that later in life the gums don't recede. What would you do?
Should I have the orthodontist put an extender in my 15 year olds upper teeth?
It would depend on why the one Orthodontist wants to put in the extender. Does your 15 year old have a lot of crowding? If so, they you will probably want to go with the extender (it could be like my 9 year old - at the time- who had a lot of crowding and not enough room for her teeth to come in. She has had the extender and the first run of braces (even then there may have to be some permanent teeth removed, including the wisdom teeth).
Me I had 4 perm ant teeth pulled before my braces and all 4 wisdom teeth pulled later.
Reply:I take it that you child has crowded teeth? If so, then a tooth pull, then extender to fill in the gap, then braces to straighten everything out.
Extenders are used to evenly space teeth where there are gaps.
Really not enough info to give a really good answer.
If orthodontist can get everything right with only braces, it is cheaper and won't take as long.
Reply:well... i had expanders or extenders in my teeth if im thinking of the same thing there little bands that go between ur teeth before braces it kinda hurts but its more like a pain where u wanna grind and push down really hard on ur teeth i was given something to chew on by the ortho unless ts what my sister had she had something that looked like a retainer and she had to put a key in it and tighten it or something weird either way both me and my sister had to get teeth pulled to make room for our teeth to move.
i had 4 teeth pulled 2 on top and 2 on botton it doesnt really hurt this was around my 5th grade year so do the math of age lol. but yea i hope this helped.

Dentist/Orthodontist Question about Braces?
I've been going to my dentist since I was 2 and he is a dentist and orthodontist. They said when I was little that I would deff need braces when I'm older and now i'm 14 and they said they came it straight. But i'm concerned about my bite. I think I have an overbite and it hurts my jaw. How do I tell my dentist? Should I not mention this to my parents? I would really like braces to fix this. Is that an alternative? Dentist/Orthodontist Question about Braces?
Hi! Like I just told you, you DO NOT have an over bite, and your teeth look great. And you do NOT need braces. It looks like you already did LUCKY you! Your bite is fine. In fact it is better than most people. So chill out, you have a great smile line and a great occulsion. Brush, floss and rinse and use a fluoride toothpaste and you wil have these teeth for at least 50 years. Good job. Marie.
Reply:yes, tell your dentist/orthodontist. mine didnt mention anything to me about an overbite until i was almost 15 and i wish i had got my braces younger because it works faster. also they said that they don't tell you that you need them, they suggest but you have to ask. thats what my crummy dentist said anyway. hope this helps.
Reply:I think u look great. Go to a different denist if u don't feel comfortable
Reply:talk with your parents about it AND ask your dentist. they wont know there is a problem unless you let them know
Reply:don't worry :) I think that you don't have to put braces. It's normal.
If you are convinced, ask a professional.. gd luck :)

First orthodontist appointment?
What do they do at your first orthodontist appointment if you exspected to get braces?
And how do they put on braces? (normal metle ones with the coloured rings)
First orthodontist appointment?
Well, when I went to my first appointment, its basically a consultation. The ortho examined my teeth and made notes in my file. All my information like x-rays, dental history from my general dentist, models of my teeth and face portriats was sent to him prior so that made it an easy process as he read up on my file prior. And your time to ask questions about the procedure. At my consultation, I have my treatment cost and payment plan set up.
When they put the brackets on, my assistant cleaned my teeth, smoothed it, glued the bracket on and put the wire in...its a lengthy process and you have an annoying mouth piece in your mouth that pinches the back of your mouth....it was a little painful, but overall it was ok.
Reply:I don't remember exactly since my first appointment was when I was 10 years old, but I believe the Orthodontist does an exam on your teeth, then they do some x-rays, then they do impressions...which are mouthpieces filled with a goopy mold that make you gag really bad. Well at least I gag really bad since I have a terrible reflex. And then they take you back into the room to talk about what you'll be having done, but I'm not sure if that's the first or second appointment, since they have to wait for the x-rays and molds of your teeth to come back.
When they put them on, I remember them getting the brackets, putting cement on them, and then sticking them on each tooth. Then they have this ultraviolet looking device that they stick on there and it beeps when each bracket is done drying. I'm just assuming that's what the little gun thingy is for. It doesn't hurt, just beeps and gets really annoying after hearing it a billion times. Then they'll stick a wire through the brackets and tie wires around each one to tighten them. I always would say I was going to pick up radio signals because before they cut all the wires down they stick out of your mouth and look really funny.
In the end, all the pain is worth it though. I'm still scared to go to the orthodontist (I'm 21, have had my braces off for 6 years and am going next wednesday to get my permanent retainer on my bottom teeth taken out). I haven't been back in three years and I have such a phobia of dentists and orthodontists but it'll be all right when you see the end result! Good luck!
Reply:well i just had mine put on yesterday so i can remember pretty well,
1st they wash your teeth with this horrible tasting water and then they dry your teeth, you have to lay there and bite on this tube for ages while it sucks your mouth, keeping it dry.they then put the hooks on at the back (this is where the arch wire starts and finishes) they then rub this glue all over your teeth and clean most of it off. then they put one bracket on each of your teeth. then they put these wires on each of your hooks (there are 4) they twist and fiddle about with them and clip them off. then the arch wire is placed and the ligatures or ''coloured rings) are placed over the top of the arch wire.
thats it your done, it only takes around 25 minuites. but it isn't pain free the next day is agony and i'm just waiting for tomorrow fingers crossed it won't hurt as bad.
also its a good idea to buy the braces care kit with all the little tooth brushes in and that and also buy plenty of wax, you will need it, because you do tend to get little sores from the brackets rubbing on your cheeks.
get a blender! mix your foods for the first week, you can't eat solid foods.
i know all this sounds bad but just think at the end of the day you will have perfect teeth.
at your very first orthadontic appointment they will take an x-ray and impressions. this is like putty and they put it in your mouth to see where all your teeth are placed, to make the braces. to have the x-ray you have to bite on this little stick thing, its really nothing to worry about, your 1st appointment is pain free.
you may be asked to have some teeth extracted or have a different brace to move the teeth slightly before having your fixed brace.
the best thing is everytime you go to have your fixed brace tightened (every 4-8 weeks) you can have different coloured o- rings.
well anyways hope this helped
*hugs*xxxx good luck

also its a good idea to buy the braces care kit with all the little tooth brushes in and that and also buy plenty of wax, you will need it, because you do tend to get little sores from the brackets rubbing on your cheeks.
get a blender! mix your foods for the first week, you can't eat solid foods.
i know all this sounds bad but just think at the end of the day you will have perfect teeth.
at your very first orthadontic appointment they will take an x-ray and impressions. this is like putty and they put it in your mouth to see where all your teeth are placed, to make the braces. to have the x-ray you have to bite on this little stick thing, its really nothing to worry about, your 1st appointment is pain free.
you may be asked to have some teeth extracted or have a different brace to move the teeth slightly before having your fixed brace.
the best thing is everytime you go to have your fixed brace tightened (every 4-8 weeks) you can have different coloured o- rings.
well anyways hope this helped
*hugs*xxxx good luck
Do you think my orthodontist should be able to do this?
okay.
my orthodontist said that if i break my braces 3 or more times he will start charging me for the breakages. i have had 2 breakages already, but they werent my fault because i was doing everything that he told me to do.
breakages:
1. the wire going to my molar has a gap because i got a tooth pulled, they didnt tighten my wire so the wire came undone and broke. (they counted that as a breakage even when they did tell me that it was their fault.
2. One of the four front teeth on the bottom was to far back and the bracket and wire kept poping off, and again the told me it was their fault but they still counted it.
when we first went to the orthodontist he told me that he would only charge me it i broke all three of them. (and i know that he isnt just keeping count, because he tells me everytime i go in that i only have one more breakage for the next two years)
Do you think my orthodontist should be able to do this?
Your orthodontist is trying to get you to be more careful with your wires and brackets so you don't extend your time in ortho. He can charge if he wants, but it's mostly a scare tactic to get your attention.
Sometimes it's our fault but most times it's the patients, and most of you know it is but wouldn't dare admit it! Oh come on, we're not dummies, we know and its usually because most of us have had braces our selves.
Just try to be more careful, every time you break something, it really sets you back since the tooth isn't activated when the bracket is off or the wire breaks and it sets us back when we have to work you in to fix it. Take care of them so you will have a beautiful smile to be proud of! Good luck with your ortho!
Additional information: Do you seriously want me to believe they are putting "broken wires and brackets on" and then accusing you of breaking them? I don't think any of my patients ever accused me of that one. You may want to stop or be careful of the gum, candy, biting into foods is another one, cut everything up even pizza and hamburgers, pulling on the wires when you floss (I hope you floss) which can cause the brackets to pop off and bend the wires especially at the openings where you are missing teeth. Maybe some of this sounds familiar and will help you to realize that you may be putting some stress on your ortho that shouldn't be placed on it. Just tell your orthodontist that you are trying hard not to break anything and maybe they can give you some other pointers or start looking for stronger cement for your brackets. Good luck!
Reply:tell him this and if he still chooses to act the fool and continue to count the breakages against you then just get another orthodontist you could also look up you legal rights or his policy if there is a limit then check out the amounts times you could break you braces in the given time period you could also check out the policies of other orthodontists in your area.

Can I sue my orthodontist? He left my braces on too long, and I will lose most of my bottom teeth.?
When my dentist first saw my x-rays, he sucked in his breath in alarm, because almost all the roots of my 4 front, bottom teeth had been resorbed. He said I have a prognathous jaw, and the orthodontist should not have tried to tip the bottom teeth forward. I decided then to suck it up and live with it, and pay for implants and a bridge when the time came. Now I have lost one tooth, and am about to lose another. These are in addition to the front, bottom four. This is all because of the braces. The orthodontist does not want to pay for the implants. It has been about 6 years since the brace came off. Is it too late to sue?
Can I sue my orthodontist? He left my braces on too long, and I will lose most of my bottom teeth.?
I'd continue to persue this. if your dentist can show that the braces were a direct result fo you losing your teeth, you might get the orthodontist to pay for the cost of implants. Pain and suffering might be a little harder to get him on, but you have a damn good chance of getting him to pay for the implants. The only problem might be the fact you waited 6 years to sue him. Think of it this way.. people have won more for less. However, with him being a doctor, it's going to be very hard. Not many malpractice cases win. Only about 5% of all medical malpractice cases are against dentists.

An Orthodontist is asking us to pay $1300 for a procedure done 4 years ago.?
My son's orthodontist just recently asked us to pay $1300 for a procedure done four years ago claiming that my wife's insurance company denied the claim because of a secondary insurance, which is mine. I'm not really sure if I do included my son, at that time, on my dental insurance beacause we cannot find any document to prove it, and I know that I don't cover them for most of the time. Do I have a chance to contest this and not pay the claim. Who should be liable for everything.
An Orthodontist is asking us to pay $1300 for a procedure done 4 years ago.?
Seems like there should be some statute of limitations here, I mean four years ago... why wasn't that caught sooner... this is just my opinion, however, as I have no legal knowledge what so ever... but it does not seem right...
Reply:CHECK WITH AN ATTORNEY. THERE SHOULD BE A STATUE OF LIMITATIONS FOR THIS.

First Orthodontist Appointment?
Any ideas on what to expect on the first orthodontist appointment?
I heard there will be x-rays...anything else?
First Orthodontist Appointment?
It all depends on the orthodontist. Some of them don't really do much but talk to you (a consultation) and then bring you back in for x-rays and molds of your teeth. My orthodontist did the x-rays and molds and then I went back 2 weeks later to discuss payment and treatment options. Make sure you don't settle on the first orthodontist that you see. See at least one other. Email me if I can be of further help.
Reply:they will also take a mould of your mouth (like when you get a mouth guard to play sport), i can't remember if they then put the braces on or you get them at your next appointment, i'm thinking at the next appointment...
Reply:it is your first time and you are going to get braces you will most likely get spacers(rubber bands put on your back teeth to make room for the metal rings that will hold the braces in place, they literally space out your teeth.) these are rather uncomfortable. id bring some tylonal to take afterward if that is the case. maybe see if your mom can cook up some soft food it will be difficult to chew for a few days. dont worry itll be fine
Reply:It depends on where you go. My first orthodontist appointment.. they made me take X-rays, make a mold of my teeth, take pictures of me, and told me I had to pull out two teeth for my braces. I went to pull them out and then a couple days later, they put the braces on. Good luck and don't be scared. It doesn't hurt while they do anything.. it's just the day after that hurts!!
Reply:nothing happens alls they do is talk to you about what their planning on doing and what you want out of that and what your teeth should look like after the process of braces trust me i just went to day and thats what they told me!

Should i trust my orthodontist?
my friends told me not to trust the the time my orthodontist gives me to get my braces off....my orthodontist told me i would be getting my braces off in august.
and its july, then she told me the latest i would get them off would be october.
and im afraid that october will roll around and she will tell me i get them off in a few more months.
i really dont know what to think.
Should i trust my orthodontist?
dont trust him. they said i would get them out 6 months before they actually did. i was so disappointed and to this day i am still disappointed in them
Reply:It all depends on how the braces are helping. That first estimated time is given with "the average" result probably. Since the ortho had checked up and came to the conclusion that you needed more time he gave you another estimate. Depending on how you progress, your time could be extended or earlier. Let nature take its effect
Reply:Where did your friends go to dental school?
You're a long way into treatment. If you don't trust your doctor at this point, it's probably too late.
Orthodontia is not an exact science. You are a human being and your teeth are being moved through bone tissue. They can only move at a certain rate in order for your body to accommodate the movement. Cells behind the tooth root regenenerate, cells in front of the tooth make room. It's an amazing thing your body is doing.
So, if your friends know more about biology than your doctor, trust them. If not....
Reply:are your frends orthodontists?
Reply:Yes you should trust her. Sometimes orthodontist are too optimistic and underestimate the time it will take. But it depends on how your teeth react to the forces of the braces and an orthodontist can't exactly predict when they will be ready. Also, it depends on how compliant the patient is by coming to their appointments and wearing any bands that they are supposed to.
Reply:Be Zen about it. They come off when they come off. :-)

Yes; you can
Hi;
I am really sorry to hear about your case; and felt real bad about it. You of course can sue anyone its one of your rights but in this case you MUST sue as in this case that is your Duty. Your Orthodontist is accountable to this negligence and incompetence on his part; you should sue him right away not just as reimbursement ( which can never count up to your distress %26amp; grievance) but also to take away any such person from his practice so that he might not be able to do such a damage to another person. I think you should immediately go ahead with the civil suite; your case is genuine and the judge and jury will absolutely have sympathy towards your case; go for a competent and experienced attorney who specializes in these type of cases.
Best of luck and God bless
Reply:I'm not sure what the statute of limitation is, but you would be wise to consult an attourny on the matter, many won't charge you for asking, some will

Good orthodontist in DFW area..?
Does anyone know of a reasonably priced ($2,000 range for braces) orthodontist in the DFW (Rockwall,Rowlett,Mesquite,Carrollton) etc..area.
I don't want to go through Baylor Dental school because of the wait. We do have insurance but it only pays $1,000 for braces.
Good orthodontist in DFW area..?
Call the school and see whom they recommend

**Seattle Orthodontist!!!!?
I need one bad, if anyone could help me with some info I'd highly appreciate it!! after I turned 18 I lost ALL of my insurance so all I have is "indian Health" and I really don't know what to do! I do not trust the dentist that pulled my teeth.
he was mean in a hurry and he didn't listen to me or answer ANY of my questions. so is there a good cheap Orthodontist around here? Can anyone help me!!!!
**Seattle Orthodontist!!!!?
Go to the University of Washington Dental School ..they detected a rare disease in a friend of mine that went un detected for 40 years of this guys life - he got it from his mother - it was very rare - but one of the wise old retired men in the medical school pulled it right out of his crusty old a $ $.
Reply:Call your insurance company and ask which dentists take Indian Health in your area. They should have a complete list for you to choose from. There has to be more than one as Seattle is a huge area.

My orthodontist just started me with wearing rubber bands, does this mean im close to ending treatment?
well my teeth are pretty straight, and all of my friends said that getting rubberbands was one of the last things they did for their teeth, does this mean i could only have a few months left? i know you can't really give me an accurate answer cause your probably not an orthodontist and don't know what my teeth look like, but from your experience, do the rubber bands mean im getting close to the end?
thanks
sincerely, Bob Seesk

I work as an orthodontic assistant and yes I'm sure your teeth are pretty straight by now, but what your orthodontist is doing with the rubberbands is correcting your bite. This is one of the final stages but, to give you a time line is impossible, as you already know, everyones bite is different and some correct faster than others. The one good piece of advice i can give you to speed things up is to wear you rubber bands as you were directed....at first they will make your jaws sore, but trust me that only last a few days and the more you wear them the better of you are and soon you will have a great smile :)
Reply:I had rubber bands a couple months before I got my braces off. My orthodontist told me that they were a finishing thing just to correct any thing left.
Reply:It all really depends. When did u get your braces on? The braces process usually takes around 2-2.5 years. I've worn rubber bands once during my process already (twice as in was ordered once, allowed me to stop), but now I have to wear them again after about 8 months w/o wearing them. However, I'm only about a year and a half into my process, and I still have at least a year more to go. So basically, your question would be a no for my case. But then again, everyone's gums and braces processes are different.
Good luck!
thanks

My orthodontist forgot to take the cement like glue off my teeth?
She let me leave without taking it off so i assumed it would come off by it's self but somebody told me they were suppossed to use some special equiptment to take it off can my regular dentist do it or do i have to go back to my orthodontist?
My orthodontist forgot to take the cement like glue off my teeth?
Sometimes they just let the patient go without taking off the cement. its weird but anyway....you can go to your regular dentist to get it taken off. Or if you have an appt with your Orthodontist soon, then jus wait.
Reply:i guess orthodontist but my ortho is a lady too!

The orthodontist chipped my tooth when he was replacing a bracket. I didn't know it until I got home but I knew it was feeling weird and when it wasn't going away I looked in the mirror and the tooth is chipped a little bit? What should I do? What can I get from the ortho and how do I go about it? There's been nothing but problems from this place but it's the only place that takes my insurance. What do I do?

Dental insurance providers with orthodontist coverage?
I currently have MetLife Dental which does not inlcude orthodontist coverage. I went to an orthodonitst and was advised to get invisalign to keep my teeth from gapping. Two years ago, I had molding applied to my two front teeth to close the gap and it worked and was wonderful. However, my teeth are gapping apart again. The orthodontist stated that Invisalign is the best alternative to permanently close and stop the gapping because my teeth are very straight and do not have an overbite.
Is there any insurance provider who offers orthodonist coverage to adults or do you know of any discounts available?
Dental insurance providers with orthodontist coverage?
Many MetLife Dental plans cover ortho. When your employer buys the package, they can select whether or not to add that benefit.
Most often, it is not the insurance provider, but the employer who decides what is or is not covered. Ask your HR person, or whoever administers your health plan.
Reply:Coverage varies from company to company and even plan to plan within the same company. Check and see if an ortho rider can be added to your existing coverage. Good luck with your smile!

I had braces. my orthodontist said i have to wear it at night for the rest of my life. but online, it says i only have to wear it till a certain age.
My orthodontist says I have to wear a retainer at night for the rest of my life , is that true ?
Yes, you have to wear it forever, or your teeth will move out of alignment at some point.
I know a lot of people - adults - who still wear their retainers, sometimes during the day, too. Many people get permanent retainers fastened to the inside of the teeth to keep them in alignment after straightening.
Read this:
"Whatever type you and your orthodontist choose, it's important to wear it regularly for as long as your orthodontist recommends. During the initial period (the first year after your braces come off) you will wear it 24/7 for several months. Later, your orthodontist will tell you that it's OK to wear it only at night -- every night. After another year goes by, you can wear it several nights per week. If you totally stop wearing your retainer, your teeth will shift, particularly if you had extractions. Why go to all this trouble and expense, only to screw up your teeth again? Don't be stupid or lazy -- wear your retainer!"
Now you say you "read this online," too.

Reply:You should wear your retainers for the rest of your life. Bummer, huh? I'm in that situation too. Most people stop after a year though because it's a pain. You can either wear your retainer or get a wire on the back of your teeth, keeping them in place. I prefer the retainer.
Reply:I would say yes. Both of my children as well as my sister were told this same advice which none followed. All of them are experiencing shifting of their teeth--what a waste of money.
Reply:yeah, so you can keep paying him or her for all those follow up visits. I say, wear the retainer for two years, then go commando, after that- if anything messes up- fix it with crowns, bridges and veneers. Next time you go to your orthodontist- look at the picture of their kids and take note that their college education will be funded by you. rest of your life- lol
Reply:When I got my braces off back in high school (about 15 years ago now), I was told the same thing. I think I only wore my retainer for about 6 months until I got tired of it, then I stopped. My teeth moved a little, but not enough to make any significant difference. And over the years, my teeth haven't moved back to how they were originally. I think if you wear it for at least a few months, to a year, you should be fine.
Reply:Not all your life! whats the point of the braces you had then?? i think he is just trying to scare you just so you don't forget wearing them.
Although, same thing with my situation i have removed my braces last October and told me that i have to wear retainer every night for ten years so that my teeth don't go to crocked.
now that i go see him every 6 months just to make sure that everything is going fine and as your teeth get use to be straighten they'll stop to go crocked as the years goes by.
Good Luck!
Reply:When I was going to school for dental assisting, I always learned that yes you do have to wear the retainer forever because your teeth can move back into the crooked postion. Listen to your doctor. He is educated in this field and has gone to school a couple years longer then a general dentist. This is his specialty and he has focused specificly on orthodontics.
Reply:No, I am sure the cheeky bugger is just a big fat liar.

Why cant an orthodontist or DMD or DDS do the same thing the general dentists do?
If a general dentist and orthodontist and DMD and DDS first have to go to the same college for 8 years why cant an orthodontist or DDS do things that general things do with their specialty?
Why cant an orthodontist or DMD or DDS do the same thing the general dentists do?
I'm a dentist.
"D.D.S." and "D.M.D." are simply the doctorate degrees awarded by dental schools. Some schools give the "D.D.S." degree while others give the "D.M.D." degree. They are absolutely identical degrees with regard to education and credentials. A doctor with a D.D.S. is no different than one with a D.M.D., and vice versa. It's a tradition thing, I guess. More dental schools award the D.D.S. degree than the D.M.D degree, however.
Orthodontics are doctors (D.D.S. or D.M.D.) who practice a dental specialty called "orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics". When a doctor officially enters a specialty (by becoming board certified), he/she commits to practicing only within the scope of that specialty.
Of course, any dental specialist can "renounce" their specialization and practice general dentistry. Their DDS or DMD degree means that they're qualified to do so.
It would be a big mistake, however, for an orthodontist to practice general dentistry. First and foremost, orthodontics is arguably the highest-paying health care discipline--more so than even plastic surgery--when you consider the hours that orthodontists work: usually four days a week, absolutely no call, and virtually no emergencies. A high percentage of their patients are fee-for-service, meaning that there are no insurance write-offs, meaning that they tend to get paid every penny they normally charge for their services. This means more money.
An orthodontist who relinquishes his specialty practice and starts practicing general dentistry will almost certainly lose most of his referrals. What general dentist in his right mind would send patients to another general dentist for braces rather than to an orthodontist?
Reply:They probably can but choose not to.
Reply:if you specialize in something, you have made up your mind that this is what you will be doing therefore even though an orthodontist at some point was just like a general dentist, he or she has made the choice to practice a certain type of dentistry therefore they have become skillful in that area.
Reply:why mess around with all them anyway. who cares. go to a biologic dentist. that way you know what you are getting.

Braces....Dentist or Orthodontist?
My child needs braces. My dentist does braces and quoted me a price. I went to an orthodontist to get a second opinion. The cost was more, but I was told by the orthodontist that they specialized in braces, but a dentist does not. Is it worth the extra money?
Braces....Dentist or Orthodontist?
Absolutely! Most dentists will send patients to an orthodontist. Remember, you get what you pay for. Since an orthodontist is a specialist, he will know what to do if a problem arises.
Reply:ortho
Reply:far as i know only a orthadontist even does braces, the dentist is suppose to refer you to one
Reply:yes it is worth
Reply:Don't know. I've never really heard of a dentist doing braces. Maybe ask him for references of people he has placed braces on in the past to see how they turned out.
Reply:depends..ask your dentist if she/he was trained to do braces...
if so it will be the same...
if not...then go with the orthodontist..
but most of the time your dentist is supposed to recommend a ortho/...so i say your best shot is with an orthodeontist
Reply:Of course, Orthodontist's the best option!
Reply:an orthodontist specializes in braces...i think it's better to go for the ortho...they have more experience
Reply:definitely an orthodontist, actually i have never heard before of dentists making braces. he could be ok but i wouldnt take the risk because i am not in a position to judge by myself if the braces the dentist offers me are the right ones. besides after u put on the braces u need follow-ups, someone who will monitor the child's course and again the orthodontist is the expert here. if money is a very important issue for u why dont u try to negotiate the price a bit by telling him the actual price the dentist offered :)
Reply:its always better to go to a specialized doctor.. your regular doctor CAN do the work but it might take more time for your child to have braces.. if you're worried about the amount of time your child have braces.. i would say stick with the dentist.. there's no big difference..
Reply:I definitely think that the orthodontist is worth the extra money. They have a lot more training, and if something goes wrong, they would probably be better equipped to handle it. Also, they have likely handled many more cases than the dentist has, and experience always shows. Braces suck, and you want to get them off in the least amount of time with the best results.
Reply:I'm adult who just got braces off. I went to an orthodontist and would never trust a dentist to take care of my orthodontic needs. Orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth and dentists are more general.
Reply:go to the ortho~~more $$$ but worth it~~~
Reply:We faced this exact same dilemma. My husband works in the dental field (not a dentist) and we chose the orthodontist because they are the ones who fix the dentists problems if/when the braces go wrong. In saying that, if it's not a complicated case a dentist is just fine (meaning just straightening a few teeth, not bite corrections or jaw problems). Also something to think about "If you had a brain tumor would you go to a brain surgeon or a gynecologist? They're both medical doctors. Get the point.
Reply:Nah... let your dentist do it!
Orthodontist.. naturally are going to be more expensive, thats their speciality.
Your dentist, has the creditals... he has to. A General Dentist, can not do braces on anyone without the proper schooling. More and more dentist are doing braces nowadays, so they can get that extra cash! It doesnt mean, he'll be bad at it just because its not his speciality. Trust me, he had to have training/schooling in it, just like all those others did.
Reply:well it all depends on how much money you want to spend and the quality you want. I took my child to an orthodontidt and the price is alot more sensible than other places ive been. he has to wear them for 2 years and I can pay by the month. 1$120.00 a month thats really good deal.
Reply:Do not let the ortho fool you my dentist does some peoples braces if they are not extremely bad plus it is cheaper and it comes out with the same results and I have had no trouble with a regular dentist doing my braces so let your child decide which person he/she is more comftorable with.
Hope this helps.

Reply:Orthodontist-----two reasons---- FIRST, a specialist will have more tools and experience, not to mention the assistants having more experinece as well, as they do most, and I mean most of the work. SECOND, he will have more time. When a regular dentist does ortho, his schedule is limited for this as he has his regular schedule going on, vs, ortho they do this all day long every day.
Reply:Use the orthodontist...the dentist's plan maywork, but an orthodontist can probably do it faster, less painful, or he will propbably be able to answer your question more acuratley
Reply:it is definitely worth the extra money. Actually any amount is worth it to improve a child's self esteem. An orthodontist would know more than a dentist. Good luck
Reply:You should see an orthodontist. Orthodontists specialize in fixing teeth/malocclusions. They are versed in the newest and latest treatments to make your smile perfect. The cost of going to an orthodontist is expensive, but it is worth it in the long run. If you do not take care of your teeth, it can cause serious problems and cause you more money and trouble in the long run. I would go to an orthodontist and get a consultation. You can ask other mothers and fathers who their child is seeing and consider seeing their orthodontist. If you start your child young, your orthodontist can coordinate a plan with your dentist and work together to get your child the best smile.
