Can orthodontists tell if you have a cavity with there x-rays?

Before I got my braces he took an x-ray. Would the orthodontist be able to see if I had a cavity or not.

Can orthodontists tell if you have a cavity with there x-rays?
Most likely not. They aren't really looking at all of your teeth for cavities, they leave that up to your dentist, they are just looking to see how your teeth are aligned. That's why they tell you to go to the dentist and get any fillings and a cleaning done BEFORE you get your braces. The dentist has the right x-ray system to tell if you have any between the teeth, but they can't really tell if they are on the top or sides unless they are HUGE. That's why they use the explorer tool to look for them.
Reply:It's hard to see cavities on the kind of xrays orthodontists take, so unless it was really big probably not
Reply:Yes they can.

Do orthodontists perform surgeries?

do orthodontist perform surgeries on bone structure of the mouth or is that another specialty in dentistry?

Do orthodontists perform surgeries?
Negative. They would refer you to either a General dentist, Periodontist, or an Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon. They deal strictly with the occlusion (alignment) of the teeth.
Reply:it depends on how your teeth looks like....if serious then you might need it...
Reply:It is usually the domain of an oral-maxillo-surgeon.

Some orthodontists are both
Reply:Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both.

Here are some surgeries in the orthodontic category:

Orthodontic treatment

* Implants and implant-supported prosthesis — also an orthodontic treatment as it involves bones

* Apiectomy — also an orthodontic treatment as part of the underlying bone structure must be removed.

* Extraction — a procedure in which a diseased, redundant, or problematic tooth is removed, either by pulling or cutting out. This procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia and is very common — many people have their wisdom teeth removed before they become problematic.

* Fiberotomy — a procedure to sever the fibers around a tooth, preventing it from relapsing.
Reply:Usually that is oral and maxillofacial surgery. Orthodontists usually put braces on and make teeth straight. I think there is only one person in the country who is both an orthodontist and an oral surgeon.

Any Orthodontists out there?

I am getting a 'Radiance' Brace fitted next month and my Orthodontist says there is no need to take any of my Teeth out to make room for the realignment as he can just shave some of my Teeth to make them smaller to make room.

Surely doing this will damage my Teeth, make them sensitive, prone to staining etc? is this normal practice? because I don't like the sound of it.

Any Orthodontists out there?
I feel that to deny a treatment or be skeptical about a dental procedure just because of a tiny reason that you dont like its sound--- please dont be afraid. Your orthodontist is the best judge -- he is rather saving your teeth from extraction by suggesting shaving off the required teeth--- and please note, they take all precautions to prevent subsequent sensitivity, to make it less prone to staining. Yes, of course, to make room for realignment sometimes they have to resort to slicing-- which is very much a normal practice. God Bless and Merry Christmas !!

Do Orthodontists have a higher yearly salary than Dentists? If so, how much averagely in a year?

I really want to be an Orthodontist, and i know it will take a lot of school.. like a lot math and science right?

But, in the end it will all be worth it right? worth it for the salary, and not to mention doing something you enjoy.

Do Orthodontists have a higher yearly salary than Dentists? If so, how much averagely in a year?
Median income of an orthodontist is $145,600

Median income for a dentist is $129,920

An orthodontist attends four years of college, four years of dental school, and 2-3 years residency. Classes include Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics

A dentist generally has to receive at least 2 years of pre-dental college, but most have their Bachelor's degree. From there they pursue 4 years of dental school. The classes necessary are very similar to the requirements of an orthodontist.

I have to say, when I went in for my braces I was amazed by all of the geometry, when I viewed the diagram, I was really in awe of all of the work that goes in.

Ultimately, there aren't that many differences in the salary, there is more work involved in becoming an orthodontist, but regardless, in either job you will be giving people healthy and beautiful smiles. Definitely an admirable profession.
Reply:Yes. Probably because they have more schooling
Reply:Right now it sounds like a high paying job is what intrigues you. Before becoming an orthodontist you have to attend college and then dental school. While going through that process you may realize that ortho. is not for you. Enjoy what you do now and strive for success and who knows you maybe an orthodontist someday, hopefully for the right reasons...to help people.

Do orthodontists typically run credit checks?

i have been receiving treatment with braces for 10 months now. the ortho i was going to was letting me pay out my 2500 treatment at 100 dollars per month and their office doesnt run credit checks. well, he is elderly and sick and i was told last week his practice is closing. i still have 1 year of treatment left to go and am having to now switch to a new orthodontist. i have a consultation with a new ortho this monday but am so worried they are going to base it on a credit check. my credit is bad. if they do run credit and it's bad will it have an effect at all that i have been paying the other office on time, every month 100 dollars per month?

Do orthodontists typically run credit checks?
well they do run credit checks but there not real picky, its not the same as buying a house or something haha, they will be looking for good payments, they wont want to see anything left unpaid currently so if you have any debts that are in colections or something get it taken care of asap (you should do that anyway) im pretty sure you will be ok.
Reply:You have an agreement with your current ortho, they should find someone else to honor it I think.
Reply:get a reference from your current ortho about your credit worthiness with them.

Any orthodontists here?

i have quite bad overcrowding in the upper jaw, because there is not enough space between the 2nd and 4th teeth (1mm on the left side; none on the right) to let the 3rd come in between. all the dentists ive seen tell me to extract 4th teeth, however one explained that if i do so, there will be a gap between the 5th and 6th teeth at the end of the treatment. Im 14yrs old and still growing. another dentist (not orthodontist) said that my jaw will possibly expand as i grow, so now im even more confused. me and my mum decided to wait 6 months - 1 year to see if my jaw DOES expand and then proceed with treatment. what do you think?

Any orthodontists here?
ok first u need to make 2 kinds of x-rays i hope that u already made them b4 taking ur orthodontist`s advice .. cuz it will help him decide wats best to do

then ur doctor can decide wat best to do .. but i think u should go with extracting the premolars and having braces on and dont worry about the gab .. cuz ur doctor will know how to close it useing the braces to move the teeth .. do it now its better that ur still young cuz wen ur older it will be harder to tolerate the braces

and ur upper jaw wont expand enough to solve ur problem so dont wait for that to happen

Reply:Its saturday, All ortho docs are out on the golf course or on their yachts !!!!
Reply:You should set up a free consultation with an orthodontist. You may need to get some teeth pulled or get braces. You need to see an orthodontist in person so that thye can see your teeth and find out what will work best for you.
Reply:I'm not an orthodontist, but I have had orthodontics. I had the same kind of issue where they were telling me to wait and all that noise, but first what you need to do is see an orthodontist and get his/her opinion first, then you can decide what you want to do. If they recommend waiting then that is best. Your first step is to see an orthodontist so they can tell you for sure what you are dealing with.
Reply:wow...your in a bit of a situation....all i have to have is braces (i'm getting them in febuary) and night retainers. I'd say extract 4 teeth cuz i had 2 teeth pulled out an it didn't hurt that much...and a gap isn't that bad....u can always get it fixed when u r older!
Reply:i say you leave it to the professionals because when you get answers from people on the internet that you dont even know, you can end up hurting yourself and making your jaw hurt even more. see the answerers suggestions and if you think one of them really might work, suggest it to your dentist.

but to answer your question, personally, i dont think you should see an orthodentist unless you need braces. if braces are out of the question, i say you just see your dentist.

and another thing, since you mentioned you were 14, i dont think you can get braces unless all of your baby teeth have fallen out and all of your permanent teeth have grown.

good luck
Reply:I'm not an orthodontist but a friend of mine had the same problem. An orthodontist can put a thing in the roof of your mouth (I don't know what it's called) that connects to like four teeth and it has a box in the middle and each week you use a key that expands the contraption and in the end you'll have a wider jaw line. It may be sore after each tightening for some people but it works.

Good Luck
Reply:I had the exact same problem, execpt my upper jaw is much smaller from a birth defect

My braces had springs attached to the second and fourth teeth and so creating a gap for the third to come down. The, the springs are removed and a bracket is put on the third tooth, to stop it from making the rest of the teeth irregular....It worked magically with no teth extraction, and the brace design is that of the states (i live in the UK) so there is no more tightening. Ask your orthadontist/dentist and move orthadontists again if necessary
Reply:I'm 13 years old and I have had braces for about 1 year. when I didn't have braces, I basicly had the same problem as you do right now. My teeth have been perfectly straight for 4 months now. Braces are definately the best solution to crowded teeth. If you want top and bottom braces it will be about $5,000. And depending on the orthodontist you can get charged every time a braket brakes. Good Luck!! ;)

I need advice from orthodontists please!!! What should I do?

I got my braces removed about.... 9 months ago I believe. He told me to wear my new retainers 24/7 (except when i eat of course) until further notice. But I didn't listen to him and I stopped wearing them for about 2 months. I tried putting them both on again. My top jaw still lets my retainer fit on, but my bottom jaw got so screwed up I didn't even notice! So I went back in for my check up and he told me to just put on the retainer whenever I can and it would slowly go back to normal. Well I tried that for the first 2 months and nothing was happening at all. So I just stopped wearing it all together. Now I have a loose tooth in the very front because my jaw is getting really badly messed up from my new teeth growing in the back. I told my mom about it but she isn't letting me go back to my orthodontist... Is there anything I can do with my old retainer to try and make my teeth go back strait at all? Or am I doomed until I somehow make it back to my orthodontist?

I need advice from orthodontists please!!! What should I do?
Oh, boy you have a real problem due to your neglect. You need to contact your Orthodontist ASAP. It's possible that your lower teeth will need to be rebanded at this point. In any case, I am concerned about the loose tooth and this needs to be addressed. Tell your mom you would like to pay for your mistake yourself as this may ease her mind. Good luck!

How much do orthodontists make owning their own practice?

What's a rough estimate of how much more an orthodontist who own's their own practice make than one working for someone else? Whats their average salary/income? Is there anything that could help somebody be more prepared for being in the top of their dental school class? How hard is it to get into dental school and then become an orthodontist? thanks for any answers!

How much do orthodontists make owning their own practice?
Giving out salaries is so tricky since different parts of the country are different - way different.

Owning your own practive is DEFINITELY the way to go if you have the right personality. Highest income this way.

To get into an ortho residency after dental school, you have to be at the very top 3 or 4 in your class (usually 80-100 in each class).

If this doesn't happen, the income being a general dentist can be very lucrative as well.

Good Luck!

Frenulectomy question - Any Orthodontists available?

My 7 year old son has been in an expansion retainer to correct his underbite. His orthodontist now wants to do a frenulectomy. Is this necessary? Also, the orthodontist wants to pull 5 of his baby teeth, 1 lower and 4 upper. Does this have to be done or can I wait for his teeth to fall out naturally? It will cost me $89.00 per tooth plus $250.00 for the frenulectomy! If this is necessary I certainly will pay to have these procedures done, but are they really necessary?

Frenulectomy question - Any Orthodontists available?
I work for an Oral Surgeon, we pull hundreds of teeth a day. I think that what she charged you is a little much for a simple extraction which is what that would be. We charge less then $100 for adult teeth that are simple and $70 for those that are baby teeth. If the teeth are really loose I would have your son wiggle them, bribe him if he gets them out you will give him a reward. I would have the frenulectomy if you are having Orthodontics because that frenum can cause teeth to shift and ruin the work that the Ortho has teeth.

Rapid Palatal Expander (for dentists, orthodontists, or people that have had an RPE)???

Hi, all! I am a 23 year old female and my orthodontist and I were discussing my options for my crossbite and the RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander) was brought up. He expressed that this method MAY not work due to my age (since it is primarily used on children and teenagers) but we have decided to try anyway since the surgical assist is very aggressive. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there older than me or close to my age that the RPE worked for? Also, if a dentist or orthodontist reads this, what is the oldest patient that they know has had this procedure (and it worked)? If the RPE doesn't work for me my orthodontist said I could live with the crossbite and the braces will correct it a little bit. I appreciate any input! Thank you so much!

Rapid Palatal Expander (for dentists, orthodontists, or people that have had an RPE)???
A hyrax or RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander) is used to widen the arch. Typically it is used during growth and actually splits the palatal suture causing both growth in that area. After growth occurs there is much less pure tooth movement as opposed to tipping or tilting of the teeth but is still an effective way to add arch width. I have used such treatment on adult patients much older than yourself and consider it an effective adjunct to orthodontic treatment.
Reply:The oldest patient that we have used one on was a 19 year old female. It worked just fine.

Good luck!!!

Orthodontists help! Will using 2 rubber bands makes my braces move faster?

I have braces and I was told by my orthodontist to used rubber bands to straighten my teeth. If I were to double up each one and have 2 on each side instead of one would this make my teeth move faster or just mess things up. If there are any orthodonists out there or people who know the answer to this plz help.

Orthodontists help! Will using 2 rubber bands makes my braces move faster?
Do NOT use two rubber bands on each side. It could totally mess up your mouth. Not a good idea. Your orthodontist knows what he is doing. If you try doing anything on your own it will create a mess that will take LONGER to fix.
Reply:Idk i'm not an orthodontist, ask yours
Reply:i think it would just mess it up because they estimate how far your teeth would move if u use just one rubber band but if u use two it would make them move faster and they might move too far. plus they move good enough if u wear them for a long period of time.
Reply:HELLO,

I DID THIS WHEN I HAD BRACES IN COLLEGE.

THE EXTRA PRESSURE WAS A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE AT FIRST, BUT I QUICKLY BECAME ADJUSTED TO THIS.

THE TEETH DID MORE FASTER THAN THAN JUST 1 SET.
Reply:well i think you should not try using or doing something from your side without getting your orthodontists concern, orthodontic treatment is always dependent on amount and direction of application of forces and your orhodontist knows what is good and appropriate for you as application of excessive force can lead to deleterious effect rather than beneficial .

Two orthodontists, two different opinions?

I have an overbite, a 7mm overjet, and maxillary and mandibular crowding of 4mm. One orthodontist says that improvements in my overbite and overjet cannot be completely corrected without extracting teeth or jaw surgery. The other orthodontist says that jaw surgery isn't necessary and neither is tooth extraction.

I'd just like to hear some opinions from professionals or those who have had similar cases as mine.

Two orthodontists, two different opinions?
You went to two orthodontists and only got two different opinions? You're lucky! (haha)

Ask to see projected results before accepting either treatment.

Thank you for the details, but without seeing you and x-rays, nobody here will actually be able to answer your question. Presonally, I would lean towards the one who does not recommend surgery, because it is a horrendous surgery that nobody should go through unless it is absolutely essential. In my opinion.
Reply:Prior to braces, I received 2 different opinions. Go and get you another opinion. See what the third one says and compare and contrast with the others. Jaw surgery is painful but worth it in the long run if needed. One of the orthodontist I saw told me I needed jaw surgery also but the other 2 said "no". I'm glad I didn't go to those drastic measures just to "look better" he said. I hope you make the right choice
Reply:Dentistry is a very subjective profession. Opinions on many dental/ortho procedures will vary, as you have discovered. There are many things to consider....How old are the orthodontists, is one younger than the other? The science of dentistry has changed over the years so what may have been the treatment fifteen years ago, is not necessarily what they are teaching now. It also depends on where the orthodontists received their specialty training. Different areas of the country sometimes teach different things. From what I have researched a common practice many years ago (sometimes now depending on the case) was to remove (extract) first premolars to make room for the teeth, however many people that we have seen in our office that have had this procedure have what we call a collapsed or collapsing bite. And many have to go through orthodontics again to straighten their teeth out. I am not a dentist or orthodontist so this is just opinion and experience of what I have seen. If you are not sure about which treatment to consider, a third opinion may be in order. Tell the third orthodontist what the other two have told you and see what he/she thinks. If you get a treatment option similar to one of the first two than you can proceed with more confidence. Good luck.

How can I switch orthodontists?

I have sole discretionary custody of my son. The court has ordered his father to pay 85% of all orthodonture expenses. I agreed to try his orthodontist (friend) to keep things agreeable. My son hates the orthodontist though; we have gone to two appointments. During the first, the orthodontist outlined what he would do. Yesterday, we were to have impressions made. The doctor, without informing either me or my son, took impressions and put braces immediately on his teeth!

Not only had I not given my signed permission for this, I have not seen any paperwork with projected costs. My ex already gave him a $5000 advance, again without mutual agreement.

In addition to every thing else, four of the brackets on the braces immediately fell off (within 1/2 hour of being placed)

I have another excellent orthodontist to whom I would like to transfer our business. What steps do I have to follow: transfer of money minus work done already, etc...?

How can I switch orthodontists?
Communication is the key. Relate the above story to all parties and offices involved as it sounds like you have the final say as per court order (I'm not an attorney -thank God!)

It sounds to me as if the arrangements were made before hand via your ex and the orthodontist. I'm assuming that the orthodontist has no knowledge of the court stuff and will probably wish to make it as easy as agreeable as possible especially if you have legal grounds.

Most dental offices are very understanding and want to know what is going so that they don't get caught in the middle of the problem. So communicate, stay cool and all will work out.

Are there any really cheap orthodontists in Illinois?

I want to check into getting braces or at least retainers for my teeth. I'm low on cash and can't really travel very far out of state. Does anyone know of any places, orthodontists, or even web sites that could get me a really good/cheap deal? Thanks for your time guys!

Are there any really cheap orthodontists in Illinois?
You could try calling around and see if orthodontists can give you a price range over the phone. Most orthodontists offer consultations for little to no fee. You should check with at least 2 since payment and treatment options may vary. Some orthodontists offer monthly payment plans through their office with "x" money down, no interest and no credit check. There are also some orthodontists that offer financing through companies like Care Credit or Capital One. I don't think there is a such thing as a "good deal" on braces unless your dental insurance is covering a big portion. I am in Southern Illinois and my braces will be costing me $6000.
Reply:Check with UIC dental department. They have a dental office where students intern and Dentist use patients as models for treatments. GOOD LUCK

I'm going to get braces soon and I wanna know who the best/top orthodontists in Mass!

thanks!

Who are the best orthodontists in Massachusetts?
That is easy. Go to Doctoroogle.com or just about any other review site and you will see that Dr. Rizkallah is the top doc. I found him on Dr. Oogle and he perfected my teeth in 9 months. Everyone else said it would take 2 years. The guy is awesome.

His office rocks, has a huge parking lot or across from the Davis Square red line stop. I mean it is really a no brainer.

Where can I get that tool that orthodontists use to dent/shape invisaligns/retainers?

There's this tool.. that is like a modified tweezer that orthodontists use to create a bump in a retainer/invisalign. It allows the orthodontist to have more control on where extra pressure is desired. What is this tool called? Can I order it online somewhere?

Where can I get that tool that orthodontists use to dent/shape invisaligns/retainers?
I think its called Invisalign Detail Pliers, check this link, it has some pics:

http://www.aligntechinstitute.com/files/...

I think when you are a dentist, these detailing pliers come with the Invisalign Kit when you finish the certification process but I could be wrong, I couldn't find them anywhere else, I would check eBay, there is always a lot of dental materials for sale. if you don't need this specific pliers, searching for Ortho pliers can bring you something very similar in function, check http://www.henryschein.com/ they are major retailers.

see if you recognize the tool you're looking for. I couldn't get the pics to show on my pc, but maybe it will work for yours.

my guess it's a form of plier like the birdbeak or mathieu, used for bending. or it could be a pair of cotton tweezers.

depending on what you need it for, as long as you're NOT doing your own modifying of your retainers...go to a hobby store and look at the jewelry making tools. there are wire benders/nippers there that are similar.

Can I please hear from some orthodontists about possible allergic reaction to braces?

Today is day eight with new braces. Not so bad getting put on, within 15 to 20 hours, hives/swelling of legs which cleared with Benadryl, but each day since progressively worse, and there is constant burning of my mouth, gums, teeth all over. Also so much swelling it feels like my mouth is trying to turn my head inside out, and I have a few lesions in my mouth. Frustrated and in pain. Went to orthodontist today concerned re: allergy, but he believes that it is not and that the rash had nothing to do with the braces, especially due to affected area (legs). However, medical research I read last night written by orthodontists reported that the hives/rashes could show up anywhere and there were cases with rashes on wrists and bellies. I have a tremendous # of other allergies, including rubber, latex, adhesives, and I am so miserable that it is hard to speak. He asked about allergies, He wants me to wait it out another week, and I think it is allergy and cannot imagine more suffering

All dentists and orthodontists?

do ALL dentists and orthodontists give nitrous oxide if the patient requests it INSTEAD of the needle??

like for removing teeth for example.

All dentists and orthodontists?
Not all dentists are nitrous-equipped. Some have it, some don't.

Also, the chief effect of Nitrous Oxide is as an anxiolytic (makes a patient relaxed and prevents nervousness). It has very little anesthetic effect, and you will still need an injected local anesthetic to prevent pain during dental procedures such as tooth extraction.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Im telling you now if your needle nervous ask for nitrious which for 20-30 mins yes they charge by 30 mins usually but the needle for the most part is better than nitrous and thats from asking family, friends and myself using

Are there orthodontists in England?

OKAY, OKAY settle down... I really want to know!

I've noticed that almost all British actors have crooked teeth (even Kiera Knightly, who I love). Here in the US almost every teenager wears braces at some point and you don't have to be famous or necessarily rich; a nice smile is everything to us. Both my kids wore braces and I get my teeth whitened, which is very commonplace here. Is it just not a big deal in England? Does England embrace their crooked teeth? Do you have orthodontists in England?

How do orthodontists.......?

how do orthodontists put an impacted canine tooth in position if there isnt enough space do you need braces or can they just use a bracket and no braces?

How do orthodontists.......?
I'm a dentist.

They make space. This can be accomplished by different means (which I won't get into here).

Yes, you will need braces. Not only that, you will likely need surgery to expose the canine and have a bracket attached to it.
Reply:they expose the hidden tooth. place a bracket on that. put braces on other teeth too.

make space for canine and bring canine to its place.

Switching orthodontists?

ok so ive had braces for like 9 months and i have the ceramic clear 1s but i rly want 2 switch 2 invisalign. is it possible to switch orthodontists or do you have to stay with the same one because of the payments?

Switching orthodontists?
Not all orthodontic conditions respond well to Invisalign. It's a very sexy technology and does have some advantages (besides being less unsightly it comes out allowing normal cleaning o teeth), but the level of control is less.

You should discuss this with your current orthodontist, who doubtless knows if you would be a candidate for invisalign.

The lab fees for Invisalign are quite high, so you should expect a significant addition to your fee if you are able to switch.

Recommended Orthodontists/Dentists in Toronto/Ontario?

Anyone know any good orthodontists/dentists that offers free consultation (first visits) on braces in or near the Toronto area (include scarborough, north york etc.)? I've had a free friends who recommended me some but did not like their dentists.

Recommended Orthodontists/Dentists in Toronto/Ontario?
Most orthodontists or dentists who practice orthodontics will allow a first visit at no charge. This will give you a feel for the office and a general discussion about whether you need braces, a general idea of costs and have you schedule further appointments for assessment and treatment planning. These appointments do cost.

When you consider who you want to go to see, you need to take into account how good you feel your friend's dentists did the job, how difficult your case is, if the office hours suit your needs, if they are available if you have an emergency.

Toronto orthodontists are listed in the Yellow Pages. As well, many general dentists practice orthodontics and will have advertisements for it. 60% of all orthodontic treatment is done by general practitioners or pediatric dentists, so keep that in mind when choosing. 80% of cases are not too difficult and can be done by a general dentist too.

Excellent!! a few years ago there was a huge need for doctors and nurses but now that the housing market has sorta went down, it gave phoenix the time to have EXCELLENT medicare.

There are now plenty of clinics and hospitals here too.

Yeah there are plenty of Orthodontist here. i mean plenty!. 1 most popular one is Called "Southwest Dental Group" look them up.. they charge nearly 1/2 the price of normal repairs and braces
Reply:PHX has a ton of great hospitals. We have a Mayo clinic even. Since there are so many people most of the doctors are very good but the hospital ERs are very busy. There are a ton of ortho's here... just look through the phone book or ask around

Are there any orthodontists, etc. out there!? i have a huge problem dealing with my reatainers (for the teeth)

i got temporary retainers about a year and a half ago, and i am still wearing them. as you know, temporary retainers are the ones most people have, pic:

http://www.archwired.com/images/My_Retai... and i wear my retainers religiously, 24/7. the reason that i have been wearing them for so long is because my orthodontist says that my teeth moves very easily. he told me to wear it for 1 year ALL DAY...1 year passed, in addition with 6 MORE months! i was so longing to wear them at night. so my question is, would i still have to wear those obvious retainers for the rest of my life, 24/7? cuz my doctor said that i would be able to wear it at night only, if i had worn them 24/7 for a year. but he told me to wear them for six more months. should i get permanent retainers instead? if i have insurance, would i have to pay money to switch from temporary retainers to permant? and also, are there any orthodontists or teeth specialist that i can talk to online? i'm so sad, i'm crying as i type

Are there any orthodontists, etc. out there!? i have a huge problem dealing with my reatainers (for the teeth)
you have to wear your retainer for a long, Long time or your teeth will become crooked again?!?
Reply:Relax, I had the same deal with my fixed braces, a year became a year and a half and then nearly 2 years.

Ask your dentist or orthodontist about fixed braces, at least then you wear them for a few months, and then only wear a retainer at nite, in my opinion it would really speed up the dental process, as braces are a lot more sturdy in comparison to retainers.

Goodluck

Orthodontists or people who have had braces!?

Im getting braces soon! Whats it like? Can you tell me what its like? I think Im gonna need teeth pulled...whats that like??? What is it like getting the braces put on, getting them tightened, anything like that?? Also, whats a molar band?? I have read people using that term on here and I wanna know what it is! Do people make fun of you?? Help!! I dont know what to expect!! And for the orthodontists on here especially, if I have staright teeth except for one tooth on the top where a baby tooth wouldnt come out, and the tooth came in on over it, if I have a tooth on the bottom that is kinda sideways, like the sides at 11 and 5, lol, and then 2 other teeth barely out of place, but still slightly out of place, how long would I need braces? Oh yeah, I dont think I have an overbite/crossbite.

Orthodontists or people who have had braces!?
Hey, it's ok....I have braces and I've had them for 2-3 years....it hurts when you first get them on...so, before you go....take lots of tylenol....otherwise...it's fine....for the first week or so focus on eating mostly soup and drinking....the solids can sometimes hurt....(same after you get them tightened)....it just depends....you might need them for long at all....it's hard to tell....no one ever makes fun of me....actually, people say they look cool...and just have fun!....i mean, the colors rock! so take advantage of them....and (i never listen....hehehe....) i eat stuff i shouldn't and it doesn't hurt...I'm not saying you should...but they make it sound worse than it really is.....lol....yeah....gum doesn't stick...although, i wouldn't recommend really chewy caramel...lol....ok....i hope this helps...and relax....you'll get used to it....

Reply:the orthodontists told me that it was going to hurt when i got braces but i didn't it only hurts when i get my wire replaced or they bend it some more but it doesn't hurt that bad and the pain is usually gone within a day
Reply:braces feel like you lost the smoothness in your teeth. but, after about 2 days your totally used to the feeling. but, when you first get them on, when you eat youll feel aching all in your mouth and i will have to eat liquidy foods like ice cream. you might sometimes get the same feeling again once there tightened. when you go to get them on and tightened ALWAYS wear chap stick becasue they will stretch out your lips for a long time and they will get dry. getting them on can be really annoying but once there off, its so amazing. i had about 5 of my baby teeth pulled because they wouldnt fall out and its no big deal. you wont even know that they had pulled them. the only part that hurts is when you get a shot in your mouth to knumb it. and your mouth will bleed for all day. instead of using nasty gause to soak up the blood, use tea bags so its not so discusting (my dentist told me to do that and its better!) nobody besides your very own orthadontist can tell exactly how fast your teeth will move but just wait and get it over with. trust me it is so worth it in the end. good luck!
Reply:Braces aren't that bad. I had them for 8-9 years. Pulling teeth isn't bad either. The area around the tooth is numbed up so much that you only feel some pressure. It is out in a blink of an eye. Your teeth get a bit sore when tightened, but nothing that isn't tolerable. Molar band is a band that it put on the back teeth. No one ever made fun of me. i thought they were kind of cool, and you will be glad you did when they come off. If anyone makes fun of you, wait till you see the jealousy on their face when the braces come off, and your teeth and smile are better than theirs!
Reply:Braces are SO! worth it. You will have a beautiful smile and will enjoy it for the rest of your life. You will be given anesthetic, so having your teeth pulled won't hurt. Afterwards, you will be sore. Be sure to follow their instructions. A molar band is a metal band that encircles your molars on each side of your mouth, and keeps your teeth aligned in a perfect arch. At first, you might be self-conscious, but in time, you will forget about it. And be sure to wear your retainer faithfully after your braces come off! Good luck.
Reply:omgoodness. dont worry so much. having braces is a pain in the butt in the beginning and whenever the brackets or wires break. i had 8 baby teeth pulled out that wasnt fun my mouth got swollen and i started drooling everywhere because of the anistetic, but everyones reaction to the anistetic is different. with me i had to have surgery too to have teeth pulled down in place now that was hell i had to get stitches and stuff. when the wires are tightened it doesnt feel bad at first but after an hour your teeth feel sensitive and its hard to eat. but other than that its no biggie. having braces is sooo worth it. my teeth were bucked and crooked now they are str8 and in place i think im gonna need my braces for another year. idk how long youd need braces it depends on your teeth. its all worth it in the end so dont worry so much. its not that bad. hope i helped.
Reply:I know where you can save money on your braces.

Orthodontists/ Dentists???Please answer!?

Hey all! I got my braces on on Monday and the molar bands are really annoying, mainly because of the little "cleats" on the inside of the band (on the lingual side of the band). Does anyone know what the point of these cleats are (other than being some sort of medieval torture device)? Are there any orthodontists out there that can tell me the actual purpose of the cleats??? Sorry to post this again, but I haven't gotten any real answers yet!

Orthodontists/ Dentists???Please answer!?
I answered in your previous post...

The cleats are used to help with rotations, space closure, and elastics. For example, if a tooth is rotated, a chain can be attached to the cleats on the lingual, causing the tooth to rotate. Sometime cross-elastics are needed to help correct a crossbite. The rubber bands attach on the lingual cleat to the outside of the opposing arch.

Sometimes the cleats will bend outwards and cause more pain. If this happens, you can push them in toward the band. Also, wax can be used if soreness persists. If its really bad, ask the orthodontist if they will be needing it. Sometimes they can be polished off if they will not be used.

Orthodontists,dentists,and teeth experts plz help!?

i brush my teeth every morning and when I get to school I have bad breath and i even use strong mint flavored toothpaste. I dont understand y this happens? Can u plz help me w/ this problem! Plz any dentists, orthodontists

Orthodontists,dentists,and teeth experts plz help!?
my grandma always had really bad breath and my mom told me when i was little that it was because she was constipated. doubt its true but you never know lol

Also make sure you brush or scrape your tongue, all the way back because this is where the bad smelly germs are.

good luck

ps- might just be your self-conscious about it and no one else even notices.
Reply:Bad breath (aka, halitosis) is not caused only by problems in the mouth.

Diet, medications, stomach or other health problems may also be respnsible.

Have your dentist first rule out that it's not a dental problem first. Then see your physician to make sure it's not a systemic problem.

Orthodontists Only PLEASE.?

This may sound silly, but I have perfect teeth

EXCEPT for my two front, middle ones.

They are perfectly aligned, just pushed a little back

Im wondering if going to the dentist or orthodontists can help me push them front since its not really much,

and they have the space to fit if pushed front

i dont really want to get braces just for 2 teeth..

Orthodontists Only PLEASE.?
try one of those new mouth guards like invisaline to straighten your teeth, I had the same thing, no need for braces and it worked.
Reply:ok, so i'm not an orthodontist, but i had one crooked tooth and they made me get braces, but i didn't have to wear them for very long, only about 9 months.

As for the person above me, Invisiline is braces, so you could get that, but they are the same as braces just invisible, if that makes any sense....=P

Orthodontists Question?

Orthodontics Question?

Is it true that Orthodontists make major money aka $300,000 - $400,000 a year?

Why is it so?

Please be as elaborate as you can.

Orthodontists Question?
Hi,

How much one earns is relative to where he or she works, in what town or suburb. Whether the area is metropolitan or rural. If the orthodontist has lots of patients and they pay well and not forget or pretend to forget to pay their bill, yes it could be as high as that. Also if you have friends in the field, colleagues who value your opinion in this field and get referrals for it, yeah, maybe. But if one or the other is missing, maybe not as high.

Why is it so? Hmmm.... for one, if you have more patients, you have more income, that is if they pay you. IF you are in a more urban or metropolitan area, they tend to charge more than the usual because their rent is higher and cost of labor for all the other staff who work for you. So, you have to charge more and the people who go to these locations are usually people who can pay and will pay, so not too much worries about that part. Then, also, if you do a good job, your satisfied patients will refer other people to you for their orthodontic concerns. The people they refer you to, have families and friends too. I guess that is the same with other kinds of business, but for Orthodontic practices, the first money out for you in terms of materials is only initially, for the most part at least, that is where the bulk of your expenses are. Later on, when patients come for adjustments or follow up, you don't have to spend as much for materials. In a way, you are being paid on and on for your skill, which you also acquired expensively at school.

That is as elaborate as I can get.
Reply:Orthodontists do make great money!!! In a many cases, orthodontics are considered cosmetic although they are finding that many procedures will help with problems that may occur in the future. I have 2 sons, one with a retainer preparing to go into braces and another who has top braces. My insurance covered half of their procedures so far and our portion was still over $1000. And we're not done yet with the youngest one. Standard braces are not as expensive. Clear ones cost more. When my ex did research into getting braces, our insurance would cover none of the $3000 it would take for him to get them. To me, it has been worth every penny to have my sons teeth perfect.

Orthodontists Help? Invisalign or any other affordable option for the look im going to achieve? OrthoClear?

I'm an 18 year old male and have been looking into Invisalign. I was told today that it would cost $7000 for me to have them done. I believe the dentist was trying to rip me off. I would need only very minor work such as closing a very small gap, a small touch up if you will. I went to see another orthodontist about 2 months ago and told me he could use OrthoClear on me for $4200. He also said the process would only take 9 months as opposed to this other lady that told me it would take a year with the $7000 invisalign. She also mentioned that some "invisible", thin tooth colored braces were much cheaper and time would also be a year. She did not provide a price.

I'm a college student and cannot afford $7000. The $4200 is still much but more plausible. What would you recommend? The less treatment time overall is a plus but finance is the big factor.

Should I keep visiting orthodontists for consultations? I'm in southern cali in Norwalk.

Orthodontists Help? Invisalign or any other affordable option for the look im going to achieve? OrthoClear?
Firstly, it is true, OrthoClear was recently bought out bu Invisalign, so it no longer exists. Prices for Invisalign can vary greatly between Orthodontists, from $5000 to $7000. My best suggestion for you is to get your work done at a Dental School, if finances are an issue. Both USC and UCLA have Dental Schools with Orthodontic Programs. Usually you can get good quality work done at these schools for half the price.

However, You may want to consider getting the braces. They are cheaper and most often can accomplish the type of movement that you want in much less time. Invisalign can only move teeth in small movements over a long period of time, braces can move things along much faster. Another option is to find out if the same movements can be achieved by a simple orthodontic appliance (retainer-like appliance). The last option is to see if you can achieve the same result with simple bonding. Often if there is a small gap (diastema) between teeth, this can usually be closed with bonding (white fillings).

It is difficult to give you exact answers, because I am not familiar with your case; however, I hope that this is helpful!
Reply:Don't know about California, but out East, regular clear braces are about $1500. Invisalign is about $5000. Honestly, the clear braces aren't all that bad.
Reply:Invisalign are more expensive then regular braces. So if you just need minor work done, you would be better off with the old standard braces.
Reply:I actually received my braces when I was 19, I'm not sure how much the cost because my parents paid (i was still in school). But I did get the clear (ceramic) braces. They're regular braces but instead of the metal squares you have tooth colored ceramic brackets. They're a lot stronger than the metal ones and stronger than the plastic brackets (tooth colored and similar to the ceramic ones). Ceramic braces tend to be less visible all together than metal braces do. I would suggest that you go with regular ceramic braces over invisalign if you cannot afford them. Invisalign will be more expensive because you switch retainers every two weeks. Also there's more of a chance of you loosing them. I believe regular braces cost around $2-3000 depending on how much work you need done, or less. From what you described you may only need braces on your top teeth and not the bottom.

Going to a dental student is something that you want to do MAYBE if you're just having a cleaning done. But not if it's something where they're installing an actuall appliance in your mouth. It needs to be done by a professional.
Reply:I'm wearing clear braces that will cost me $6,000 and 2 years to wear. I was told that Invisalign or something similar cost more. Whether you get major or minor adjustments done, the dental labs still make pretty much the same appliance so there will hardly be any difference in price there. The price difference would be on the duration of wear and maybe the experience of the orthodontist.

In my case, the first 10-12 months is when noticeable realignments happen to my teeth. During the final 12 months, the teeth are already aligned as planned and they just need to be reinforced so no noticeable movements are expected. If you only need minor adjustments then your realignment period may be much shorter.

Usually older more experienced orthodontists would know more and be better in their trade but then they probably might charge more (they probably won't tell you that). My orthodontist is in his early forties but he seems to really know what he's doing and so far in the 18 months that I've been wearing my braces I've had only one complaint and that was after the first time my braces were installed. The wire wasn't held securely at the very back molar, it snapped free and started piercing my cheek. Obviously I was in a lot of pain, but that's what happens when dental assistants are involved.

Going to too many consultations may end up costing you a lot in fees. Ask around for reliable orthodontists in your area. In your consultation, ask a lot of questions. If the orthodontist is really knowledgeable then he/she should be accomodating and not be irritated with your questions no matter how stupid they are. Remember, you're the one who doesn't know anything about braces and you want value for your money. Ask what the plan of action is, what's going to be done at every visit. An orthodontist should know how go about fixing your teeth.

Orthodontists nature of work?!?

hi everybody..here's my question..it goes mainly to dentists (orthodontists)..i decided to become a dentist but i am very squeamish meaning i wont be able to stand stinky mouths..so i figured i could go towards orthodontict as it would mainly be invovling children and teens with unaligned teeth and i enjoy working with children plus no blood no cutting invovled which i also hate to do to sb else....one last thing i was told is that orthodontist require a great deal of mechanics understanding and applying which i like very much....my question: is what i understand of an orthodontist nature of work correct????

Orthodontists nature of work?!?
Here are some sites that could help you:

American Association of Orthodontists:

Reply:You will still encounter "smelly" breath and blood at times even with adjusting. Before you go to ortho school you still need to go through 4 years of general dentistry school where you still learn the basics of dentistry. Good luck.
Reply:Yes, you have the basic idea of what an orthodontist does. But you do realize that you have to go through 4 years of dental school before you can become an orthodontist, and you still deal with blood and gross mouths. Seeing kids in braces you will see some of the grosses mouths, because teaching kids they need to keep there mouth clean can be a challenge at times. Hope it helps...good luck.
Reply:Braces are fun! We take people (teenagers) at the time when they have the POORest hygiene to START with and then put these devices on that make it WORSE! brilliant..... :)

Orthodontists get really good at guessing what the patients had for lunch as you can identify who chunks of lunch meat or Chee-tos stuck on those brackets.

As for stinky mouths, well, guess what; ....Infection control is just one reason we wear masks; not smelling people is the other.

Again, I"ll re-iterate the "You'll have to put in the four years in dental school refrain." Suck it up; you'll be fine!
Reply:Yes . But you will not be working with young children . You will start to see people at the age of at least 9 years old up . And you will have to see people in a lot of pain . and hear them phoning you up and telling one of there brackets are after falling off . And first of all you have to study for a Bachelor of surgeon . And then study for a Masters of Science. And you have to get a good grade first in school to become a dentist and move on to be a orthodontist . And I feel that you have not the ability to even use the correct order of language to say this question .You don’t have the grades to even become a dentist

so stop fooling your self . And you have to be very good in all your subjects at school , Maybe you can become a cleaner in the orthodontist surgery . You can even spell haft of the words right .

Transferring Orthodontists?

My friend will be moving from Texas to Florida in about 3 months. He has braces and an Orthodontist in Texas, but he doesn't know if he can transfer Orthodontists or how much it might cost. His father told him that his current Orthodontist (in Texas) said that no other Orthodontist would work with him (in other words, he can't transfer.) But I'm thinking that maybe his father just told him that because he has issues with him moving.

Can anyone help me out please? :)

Transferring Orthodontists?
What you do is when your friend gets to Florida find a orthodontist that is near by and affordable or with same insurance plan go see them they will get the records from the previous orthodontist and continue treatment. I hoped this helped you.

Orthodontists?

I am going to get my braces on this Wednesday!!!! 2/20/08

I am a total girly girl and I need to know how it feels when they put them on and what colors I should get!!! I have to get 4 on the top and 10 on the bottom. Should I get them all one color or patterns!!! I have to eventually get a lip bumper and rubber bands what are they like??? HELP!!!!!

Orthodontists?
ooh braces! its a bit uncomfortable when they put it on but after about 3 days you get used to it. i think you should get your favorite colors in patterns!
Reply:When they put on the braces it doesn't hurt. But your teeth will be very sore! So don't take pain relievers because they don't do anything. Try to take Orajel or eat some ice cream and drink ICEES. Get the dark colors. If you get light colors they fade and you can barely see them. Rubber bands at first are the most annoying thing I can think of. They don't hurt but sometimes can easily snap and very bad to loose so be very responsible with them. I am sorry about one thing, I don't know anything about a lip bumper.
Reply:I had braces back in the day....these were the bulky metal ones that were terrible.I had to wear a headgear at night that was horrible.I played football and many times my mouth bled. But after I got them off my teeth were straight........well worth the money and discomfort.Just be glad that your parents are getting them for you, many less fortunate kids can't afford them.
Reply:I'm also getting my braces this Wednesday. It's my understanding that getting braces put on doesn't hurt but your mouth will feel uncomfortable a few hours after getting the braces put in. I have spacers in right now and they've given me an idea of what that and the adjustments will feel like. As far as colors go, I'm getting teal and pink myself.

Orthodontists ...?

I am thinking about becoming either a dentist or orthodontist. i am leaning more towards orthodontistry. i wanted to know what you think of your work, hours, and the job overall. i was also looking at pharmacy so i am trying to get a general feel for what each job would be like. This is they year of college that I need to know by so i need to think pretty quick. Thanks so much.

Orthodontists ...?
i think you should be a orthodontist you get lots of money and in oakland you dont work that long but they get alot of money and a lot of patients trust me
Reply:You may look into General dentist that knows or practices ortho. This way you wont get Bord with just doing the same thing over and over. My Dr. does both and it is very interesting to have new challenges everyday.
Reply:okay go! good luck
Reply:well done,

i also want to be a dentist/orthodontist and that seems to be very rare at the moment. if you e-mail me I'm sure we can keep in touch. ill be back on later. hope to hear from you soon

What is the salary like? Any specific classes a high school kid should take their senior year? How hard is it to find a job / did you open your own practice?

Any/all answers would be greeeatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Orthodontists?

I visited two orthodontists because I was unsure which orthodontist to go to. I made an appointment with both of them and went to both appointments. Iam confused because I went to the first orthodontist and he to me that my wisdom teeth aren't in yet but when I went to the other orthodontist he told me that I had my full set of wisdom teeth in and he showed me with a mirror. The second orthodontist told me that I might need jaw surgery too and he explained why too. The first orthodontist never told me that anything about jaw surgery but he did talk about having a few teeth pulled to make the teeth strighten up easier. Here's the peoblem how did the first orthodontist I went to miss the full set of wisdom I have and the second orthodontist saw them clearly? I went 2 weeks apart from each orthodontist. The second orthodontist sound like he know's what to do and how to help me with the treatment of my braces. I want to go to him for braces. How did the 1st orthdontist miss them?

Orthodontists?
Why don´t you see a third orthodontist, but one that your friend´s recommend. Don´t tell him about the different opinions that you´ve got and let him explain what he sees and what treatment he suggests.
Reply:do some research about both places ask your friends that has braces or had braces where they got theres when i got my braces i had to get teeth pulled and i just got my wisdom teeth out
Reply:PEOPLE SOMETIMES MAKE MISTAKES.
Reply:is the first orthodontist old?...because if he is, then don't go to him because he might not be up to date on things...I would go to the younger of the two, because he's going to know more up-to-date things better...
