Look around for a dental school..They might be able to do it cheaper...
Where can i get my braces taken off that's not very costly....is anyone a orthodontists around here?? lol
Usually you can't just go to any orthodontist and say take my braces off you need the doctor who put them on or least an official file transfer to another doctor before you can do that plus don't forget Retainers costly, I am sensing something between your ortho who did your orginal work and you.
Reply:I work for an orthodontist. If there is a financial issue behind this..please talk to the orthodontist. They are able to work with you. They are doctors and are required to work with you. I have seem my Dr take very minimal payments and continue the treatment. Your teeth are an important thing! Communicate with the Dr. and staff. They want the best for your smile. When one of our patients comes in and talks to us about hardship we are all caring and helpful...not hatelful...I am sure the staff where you are will help. If you have moved..then contact a nearby ortho and they should be happy to help you at a low cost too!
Reply:Call different Orthodontic offices and see how they would be with payment plans.
Call General Practice Dentists, sometimes they do Ortho procedures and would be less expensive then a specialist. Try a Dental School, The students can do this while the Instructor advises.

What kind of check up do I need before I go to the orthodontists to get braces?
Like dont I have to get them checked , clean , x-rayed or something?
What is that like and what kind of appointment is that?
What kind of check up do I need before I go to the orthodontists to get braces?
you need an exam and xrays first. the dentist may have other options for you. It will be fine
Reply:just call the orthodontist you want to go to and set up a consultation.
they usually take xrays and molds of your teeth.
you dont really have to have them cleaned.
but they will tell you everything you will need done when you go
Reply:they take pictures of inside of mouth and your face, they take x-rays, one machine goes around ur head so it x-rays ur whole skull and teeth and jaw. Thye may stick there fingers with gloves on in your mouth just to see if something feels uncomfortable like in the back where th molars are..its very quick and painless. They ask u if your jaw clicks or cracks, if u get headaches etc. They also tell u to bite down alot so they can see wat your teeth r like. They will count how many teeth u have and take molds. Its genarally wat i just said. I think its a consulation check-up. It is best to get a dental cleaning by ur dentist BEFORE the braces get put on!! And brush gently and often when u get them bcuz cavities will come especially around brackets!!!! I had no cavities when i got them but when i got them off i already had like 4 fillings! Its just there r so many crevacices u have to floss and use listerine and brush, brush , brush very well and gently. Braces r definetly worth it!!!!
Oh yeah make sure the ortho has clean gloves before he/she puts their hands/instruments in ur mouth etc.
And a word of avice if u get medal braces, stay away from the white rubber band things!!! Get pink or blue or gray etc instead, the white ones turn yellow and make ur mouth look gross!!
Reply:well, you go to the othrodontists, they check your teeth and later take molds, x-rays, pics, ect. then, they tell you what you need and explain why and what it is.
Reply:you just go to the orthodontist and they tell you if you need braces
then you can set up an appointment with them
Reply:hi i just got my braces on tuesday so they might put gunk and thaen they will take it out also it depends on your orthadontist whats he going to do also they will put glue and press down on your tooth hard i have to go back to because my glue fell of toand they need to put glue in there.

Dr William Barton or Dr Tami Hoss. Whos better for underbite treatment? both orthodontists around the SD area.
I'm seeking for an underbite braces that will eventually lead to an underbite correctional surgery. Anybody that has any experienced with any of these two doctors please let me know your visit experiences. Thanks very much!
Dr William Barton or Dr Tami Hoss. Whos better for underbite treatment? both orthodontists around the SD area.
your ortho tx is a complex one since it will involve jaw surgery. It is best if you interview the doctors yourself. Ask them about which oral surgeon they will use for you. Ask them about past cases that are similar to you. If you find a person that has ortho treatment with jaw surgery then you will have one more opinion. Also check with you local Orthodontic association .TFairy
Reply:I do not think this is a safe way of assessing a doctor you want to entrust yourself to. Note that the response will be shaded and colored by the answerers' own personality and prejudices and might not necessarily guide you right. Pay them a visit.

I'm getting "part" of my braces off tomorrow. Which part do orthodontists generally remove first??
It's not always the same, but for me they removed the ones at the very back that the wire goes into, and the wire that connects all of the braces.
Then they removed the braces on the individual teeth a little later.
Congratulations!

They don't usually remove it all at once?

What do they do on the first trip to the orthodontists?
plz help im nervous, do u have any tips to help anxiety?
What do they do on the first trip to the orthodontists?
Absolutely! Do not worry at all! It is wonderful, there is no pain on this trip to the dentist, they will sit you in a chair and put a mold into your mouth for about 30 seconds, this will make a model of your teeth which they can identify the problem and resolve what braces you need. No pain at all!
When they actually do put the braces on, do not worry. Your teeth will hurt a bit for the next week, and you won't be able to eat solids. (Your teeth may also feel loose but don't worry this is normal.) After this week your teeth will feel good as new and you will be able to eat once more! When you feel this pain take some Tylenol or Asprin and just think, when this is done my teeth will be so much better. Hope this helped! Don't Worry! ☺
Reply:i hve no idea
Reply:when i first went there they took pictures of your teeth, and a full head shot of u smiling lol, x-rays..and they determined where ur braces should be and which kind u want such as metal or the clear ones..then they schedule u for your next appointment which is when u get ur braces..or whatever your there for..@ least thats wut happened when i went..dont be nervous! you will have a beautiful smile!
Reply:they listen to patient concerns, provide an orthodontic examination, indicate whether or not treatment is needed %26amp; when the best time to start treatment is, gather orthodontic records, discuss fees, also they take pictures of ur teeth using a cheek expander that goes on ur lips to make ur cheeks go out as far as they'll go w/o breaking..... it hurts
Reply:Heres better advice than I have no idea... Calm down, take 2 deep breathes. Imagine your favorite place...mines a waterfall in a tropical place. Now let the orthodontist do his job. verbalize any anxieties you have with the staff there so they can help you through it. many have numbing medicine for you gums before they do any evasive procedures. most likely they will fit you for braces or a retainer for a beautiful smile. relax, there is nothing to worry about. Good luck.

Once again i need more detail about 1st trip to orthodontists?
plz tell me! im scared they are going to have to pull my teeth and stuff! ; ( later, i have close together teeth! and and scared of the dentists....
Once again i need more detail about 1st trip to orthodontists?
Usually on the first visit, your orthodontist will only do diagnostic work. He/she will take a detailed dental history and medical history, do an oral exam, take impressions to make casts (model) of your teeth, take photographs and x-rays. After this is all done, you will have to wait till your orthodontist makes a treatment plan for you. He/she will present the treatment plan and discuss with you what will be done before he/she proceeds. Not every time there is crowding (close together teeth) will the orthodontist pull teeth. In some instances, crowding occurs when there is not enough space for teeth and there are ways to regain space without pulling. Still, it is best to talk to your orthodontist for the best treatment for you.

Can a dentist please tell me the top pay for orthodontists?
Probably around 50,000+ a year to start. Of course, my orthodontist won the lottery (for real!) and won 31 million dollars. But, of course, that's not the norm.
Can a dentist please tell me the top pay for orthodontists?
you should do a job because you like it not for the pay

Yes they can, but you need a referral from your old doc so that transition is easy esp if you on insurance

How long does does it take to become a orthodontists?
3-4 years college

What would dysplasia have to do with teeth/orthodontists?
I was reading my orthodontic file and I think it said something about dysplasia... Most of the words were really confusing and I didn't understand them, the only one I remembered was dysplasia (I think). What is dysplasia, and what would it have to do with my teeth?
What would dysplasia have to do with teeth/orthodontists?
Dysplasia (from Greek, roughly: "bad form") is a term used in pathology to refer to an abnormality in maturation of cells within a tissue. This generally consists of an expansion of immature cells, with a corresponding decrease in the number and location of mature cells. Dysplasia is often indicative of an early neoplastic process. The term dysplasia is typically used when the cellular abnormality is restricted to the originating tissue, as in the case of an early, in-situ neoplasm. For example, epithelial dysplasia of the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia - a disorder commonly detected by an abnormal pap smear) consists of an increased population of immature (basal-like) cells which are restricted to the mucosal surface, and have not invaded through the basement membrane to the deeper soft tissues. Myelodysplastic syndromes, or dysplasia of blood-forming cells, show increased numbers of immature cells in the bone marrow, and a decrease in mature, functional cells in the blood.

I'll send my photos+orthopanthogramma. I'd like to know, does invisilign work in my case?my e-mail volkovaviva@mail.ru Thanks
Hello! I need a professional consultation of the orthodontists.?
Invisalign is the most likely to help you with your teeth, i can say that without needing pictures. Invisalign help with minor orthodontic problems, such as teeth that are spread out too much or squished together too much. I would say orthodontic wires should do the trick.

BRACES - what does the tooth glue that orthodontists use taste like?
i heard it tastes like sealence (the stuff that your dentist puts on your molars so you can chew - which i HAVE had done) but i am not sure....is it ok to swallow? help!!
BRACES - what does the tooth glue that orthodontists use taste like?
My friend has braces so I asked her [she wants the credit]. She says, "The glue doesn't taste like anything. It just tastes a little like chalk. It's fine to swallow. I've done it before."
Good luck with your braces
Reply:Bitter and gross! It is plain NASTYNESS!!!

Reply:Mine tastes like nothing. And I've swallowed some on accident before, like when it fell off my tooth, and I was fine. Think of it this way, they wouldn;t put it in your mouth if it wasn't safe.
Reply:DO NOT SWALLOW IT! i have braces right now and let me tell you, the glue is the worst part of getting them on. it taste like fizzy stuff, and it sorta stings your throat. don't taste it w/ ur tounge because it will give you a rally bad feeling.
Reply:U dont really get a chance to taste it, cuz they glue it on then use there torch :) to heat the plaster-like-stuff. U taste it for like a day. And they wouldnt put anything into ur mouth that would cause sickness... swallowing sum wont kill u :)
Reply:You really wont have a chance to taste it you have so many different things in your mouth you wont even be concentrating on the taste of things! And they put cotton balls in your mouth that will absorb your saliva so you dont have to swallow
Reply:When i got my braces done it really didn't have a taste to it. I mean i guess it might have a slight taste but it is nothing that taste awful. It won't hurt if you swallow some of it but i am sure that it would not be good if you swallowed alot of it either. But the thing about the taste really it drys so fast that you really don't have time to taste it.
Reply:polymer or zinc phosphate. these substances are orally tolerated but are not food. there really is not much flavor to them
Reply:it tastes gross..
and it's not a big deal if you swallow it because it happens.
***they wouldn't put it in your mouth if it was dangerous

What happens when you go to the orthodontists office?
on thursday, may 10, i'm going to the ortho's office for a consultation or something. see, one of my canine teeth grew way up in my gums, and it's not inline with the other teeth.i also have some gaps in my teeth. do you think that i'll need braces? what can i expect to happen at my first ortho visit on thursday?
thank you
What happens when you go to the orthodontists office?
they will evaluate the way your teeth are coming in and may either, use braces which do not hurt being placed, or they will use a handy little item you have to wear at night inmost cases.
it adjusts either by someone turning a tiny screw incrementally, so it wont hurt, or by putting in a retainer that pulls slightly using rubber bands.
Reply:That happened to my canine teeth too! I need braces and have them they are not that bad. The orthodontist will talk to your mom or dad and you and they will figure out if you need braces and talk about insurance and braces plans and things. They may have you get some xrays of your teeth and such but no big deal. Braces hurt at first but you will be okay.
thank you

Why don't dermatologists take pictures, but orthodontists do?
sorry idk
Why don't dermatologists take pictures, but orthodontists do?
unknown. :(
Reply:Your dental record is important since you only get 2 sets of teeth (baby and adult). Your skin is everlasting.
Reply:Because dermagtologists can see your skin easily while, orthodontists have to see every teeth individually to check if you have cavities or a disease.
Reply:i have know idea what you are saying but thanks for the points
Reply:If you mean xrays, then dermatologists don't need xrays to treat. If you mean photographs, then you may have an orthodontist that likes to have "before and after" pictures of his work. Dermatologists probably don't care, unless they are going to present it as a case study at a conference or if you have a really bizarre skin condition they want to show to their colleagues.
Reply:I worked in a dermatology clinic for two years. The doctors I worked with took pictures all the time.

Why do dentists have the license to do orthodontic treatment? They're not specialized like Orthodontists!?
I had braces twice. The first time i got them from a dentist when i was 15, who fooled me into getting them from him and totally messed my teeth. I had to get braces again at age 20, and this time, i went to an Orthodontist. Since i had braces previously, the result of my teeth wasn't as great, but a lot better. I spent a lot of money (10 grand in total) and looking back, i wonder why the heck the government allows dentists, who know very little about braces, to do orthodontic treatment? It's like my family physician doing a heart surgery. It's very frustrating!
Why do dentists have the license to do orthodontic treatment? They're not specialized like Orthodontists!?
that's a good question.
apparently, h'm 15 and i have a dentist that's going into braces stuff but, i didn't go to him to get my braces. my mom wants me to go to a experience orthodontist that can correct my teeth.
Reply:Some dentists go through an extra two years of training to be able to practice orthodontists. I'm sure they're good at it, but not as good as orthodontists. I'm getting braces through my dentist. No complaints so far.
Just because your dentist wasn't good at braces, doesn't mean others aren't as well.
Reply:In my state a general dentist can indeed do ortho treatment, however they can't advertise or say they are a specialist in ortho as this is illegal. Most dental programs that I know of cover braces, but if the dentist wants to specialize in orthodontics and advertise that they are an orthodontist than they have to complete two additional years of specialized training after their dental school years.

Who makes more money, dentists or orthodontists?
Orthodontist, easy.
If you see your dentist regularly and take good care of your teeth then the most you'll spend at your dentist is whatever you pay for the cleanings and the xrays. Even if you had a bad tooth, they'd get about 800, for the root canal, and another 800 for the crown, but that's once in a blue moon.
(per patient I mean. Most regular 1 dentist dental offices do maybe two of these a day.)
Orthodontist never do cheep cleanings. They are constantly putting on gosh darn expensive braces and then they get paid somewhat for adjustments.
Also dentists work on 3 or four patients at once. But, Orthodontists can do almost 10-12and they don't spend as much on infection control because there's less clean up.
basically, an Orthodontist can see over 100 people in one day and put on a dozen brand new pairs of braces, and for every pair he puts on, he has an active cash flow for the next few years.
Oh yeah, and NEVER let your regular dentist do your ortho work. There's a reason you have to go to school for this specialty. Ortho work is more about Physics than normal destistry.
Who makes more money, dentists or orthodontists?
Orthodontists, then Endodontists (root canal specialists)
Reply:I'd say.......... orhtodontists, because they handle all of the braces, retainers, molds of your teeth, ect and all the dentists do is clean your teeth and check for cavaties.
Reply:orthodontists
Reply:Specialists always make more money. So orthodontist makes more.

The words 'affordable' and 'orthodontists' really don't go together. Most orthodontists do offer payment plans.. call a few in your area and check.

Do u like goin 2 the orthodontists?
ill tell u no. his office has 12 assistants and when u get there they put u in a room about the size of a room when u go 2 the doc expect theres no window and they shut the door and a assistant takes care of u and expect all there is in there is a ortho chair, computer for the assistant to put files in and a clock. the assistant either kneels or sits on couch. i hate the office
Do u like goin 2 the orthodontists?
Actually, I like it..because i know im one step closer to having my teeth straight.
Reply:well, i dont like it bc of the pain of tightening my braces. but my orthodontist and his assistints know their stuff.
Reply:Mine is not like that at all. It's one big room with lots of assistants, probably 10-12. They have the chairs aligned towards the walls, it sort of goes in a semi-circle. They are all really nice and there are 2 docs who come by when the assistant is ready. I hate after they adjust though, I ache bad.

Is it common practice for orthodontists to file teeth to create space?
I am using Invisalign, and this is what my doctor did. I should have asked before he did it, but I was not thinking straight at the time.
Is it common practice for orthodontists to file teeth to create space?
No - it's not normal - it's unethical.
I had a dentist do this to me to fit a crown, and it resulted in legal action on my part. We went to arbitration instead of court and I won the case.
A good dentist will not ruin a perfectly good tooth on purpose to fit an appliance into your mouth.
I'd find another orthodontist.
Good luck.
Reply:that should be the last resot. The dentist should ask you before he does any thing %26amp; why.
Reply:I haven't had Invisalign yet, but have had a couple of consults (different dentists in different states) and both said they would maybe have to file a couple of teeth a bit to make room, so I guess it is common .
I somewhat cringe at the fact and will avoid it if I can, though.
Reply:YES its common. the orthodontist will remove one or ur premolars and ur wisedom teeth if necessary to fill the space. By doing orthodontics u agree to let the ortho do whatever it take to balance ur occlusion and put ur teeth straight. In either way it wont even show.
Reply:I've never heard of that practice. Filing down teeth damages them and makes them more vulnerable to decay. The orthodontist was unethical in this particular case. If he needed more space, he should have arranged to get some teeth pulled, like orthodontists normally do.
Reply:usually ortho. will remove a bicuspid or a wisdom tooth to create room but filing a tooth structure isnt exactly common. the invisalign is designed to excatly suit ur mouth, since its custome made

Is it true that some orthodontists can use Retainers (Essix ones) to straighten teeth instead of invisilign?
I know it would be alot cheaper...but I just wanted to make sure this was a fact. They are clear just like invisilign but cheaper! Anyone ever have this method done before? Cost? Results?
Is it true that some orthodontists can use Retainers (Essix ones) to straighten teeth instead of invisilign?
Retainers are meant to maintain your teeth...they don't really make your teeth much straighter. Retainers are also used to fix under bits or widen your jaw...They don't do as much work as braces though.
Reply:Invisilign can be used for straightening teeth a little bit if that is what you are talking about.
Yes they can use that although sometimes its even more money costly wise than metal braces.
I can't tell you an exact cost since everyone had different prices.
Reply:well, the reason invisilign is so expensive is that an new one needs to be made every so often as the teeth move to keep moving them into the desired spots. I would assume that the same would be true for a retainer. just one retainer isnt going to keep moving the teeth. it would take many so I would think it would be all that much cheaper. I have also never heard of this. usually a retainer is used to keep the teeth in place so they dont move during the entire process.
Reply:It really depends on each person. But I think if it is minor changes a retainer will work. Not sure though.

they say its a "special plier." anyone know what they are called?

dental plier?
Reply:they just say that.
Reply:its a special tool its not a kind of plier.
Reply:I'm not sure what they are called, but they take them and they just pull the braces right off your teeth.
Reply:Phillips Screwdiver.
Reply:its just a tool that they use to pull the brakets off with. it doesn't hurt and it doesn't damage your teeth. i went through that when i had my braces taken off, but it is all worth it when they come off. :( good luck!

What's the difference between orthodontists and dentists?
Orthodontists work with teeth straightening (braces, retainers, pallet expanders, etc.)
Dentists work with the health of your teeth.(teeth cleaning, cavity fillings, tooth pullings, etc.)
Hope this helps!
What's the difference between orthodontists and dentists?
Orthodontists = braces.
Reply:no difference they are the same person. They work with teeth.
Reply:the only thing an orthodontist can do is put on braces and make appliances. a dentist can drill and fill teeth sometimes pull. do root canals. make dentures and partials.
Reply:Orthodontist specialize in the straightening of your teeth to give
U a better bite %26amp; smile. Dentist mostly check teeth for cavities
and other teeth, gum related problems.
Reply:Orthodontists put on braces
Dentists make you teeth look better
Reply:An Orthodontist has a Specialty Ed, in addition to General Dentistry. In other words, they have studied a lot more than a general dentist who does Cleaning, Root Canals, Crowns etc.
Their Specialty is to correct teeth, and biting issues with the use of "appliances" (braces).

Have you heard of orthodontists cutting the gums after braces to prevent tooth movement?
There are little fibers that connect to your teeth. when the tooth gets straight the fibers are tight and have to be loosened in order to keep the tooth from going back. the fibers reattach to your straight tooth and prevent movement. This cuts down 60 % of movement after the bands are off. You will be numbed ud and it will be so fast, It will take about 4 days to heal. you'll be fine!
Have you heard of orthodontists cutting the gums after braces to prevent tooth movement?
No!!!! That sounds awful! I was given a retainer so my teeth would not move.
Reply:I had braces for four years and I didn't have my gums cut afterwards. That isn't right.

teeth from moving.
Gums are movable.
theres not like solid.
ahah. thats not true
i had braces.
Reply:Sasasa is right. It's MINOR and even calling it "cutting the gums" sounds too dramatic. You'd want to be numb, though.

How do i fix my teeth for under $4000 AUD? Any orthodontists near either Gosford or Parramatta?
Does anybody know of a good orthodontist?
My teeth cross over at the front.
my bottom four front teeth are slightly out of line
and my top laterals look like fangs!
My parents aren't very helpful, so they said they'd only pay about $4000
thankyou heaps everybody.
How do i fix my teeth for under $4000 AUD? Any orthodontists near either Gosford or Parramatta?
$4,000.00 I wish I had your parents! You should be greatful.
If you want a really nice orthodontist that knows what he is doing go to Dr. Charles Low 37 Etna Street Gosford. Phone 4323 2828. You can pay as you go on the bill. He will keep you informed about everything if you want to know, so just ask.
Dont waste your money going to L W at Vic Court. My daughter went there and he put her braces on. He was really rough during the consults, we were always going back to have glue put back on or wires fixed and he charged like a wounded bull. ( And the parking is terrible) So we asked nearly everyone who had braces on where they had had them done and would they recommend the ortho. Charles Low was the one that was recommended the most. Now I can understand why. My daughter had her braces removed last year after having them for a total of 4 years. She is very happy with the result and so are we her parents.
Good luck and best wishes, and tell your parents "thanks"

Got a Question for Orthodontists/ Dentists???
Hey! I got my braces on about a month ago, I have a class 2 division 2 bite, (deep bite) so they didn't put the bottom braces on yet. My question is, how long does it usually take before they put the bottom braces on? Also, does this type of bite usually require wearing rubber bands? Thanks!
Got a Question for Orthodontists/ Dentists???
It should only take a few months for them to be able to put bottom braces on....rubber bands are a whole diff. ball game, usually a person doesnt wear the bands until its close to the end of them having braces, thats when the dr will decide...

How much do experienced orthodontists get payed in U.S in San Francisco?
It depends on who their clients are. Some do quite well.
However, orthodontists that have their practices down on the Peninsula -- Milbrae, Burlingame, Atherton, Menlo Park, Palo Alto -- they are making bigger bucks. $300K year, easily.

How harmful to the eyes/skin is the curing BLUE LIGHT orthodontists use? Is wearing shades enough protection?
Although my child wears the sunglasses the orthodontist gives her, I'm concerned she may open her eyes in the process. I have read where UV exposure can cause damage to the retina. I don't know if this can or has happened in the dental/orthodontal profession? She has more braces to be placed on and I am wondering if I am being overly concerned or not?
How harmful to the eyes/skin is the curing BLUE LIGHT orthodontists use? Is wearing shades enough protection?
We, assistants, use glasses that are tinted orange when using the curing light. I feel certain that your orthodontist is taking proper precautions and would not do anything that would harm your child's eyes
Reply:I totally agree with you. I never even thought about that. Maybe you should ask the orthodontis about the blue light.
Reply:Honey, your being overly concerned. Seriously, how often can your child possibly be exposed to a curing light?? I look at those lights almost everyday and I haven't had any problems with damage to my retina.
Trust me, if me looking at it numerous times a week hasn't caused damage, it won't hurt your kid if she accidentally opens her eyes.
How harmful to the eyes/skin is the curing BLUE LIGHT orthodontists use? Is wearing shades enough protection?

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. The word comes from the Greek words ortho meaning straight and odons meaning tooth.
Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopedics". Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons—improving the general appearance of patients' teeth and face for cosmetic reasons—but treatment is often prescribed for practical reasons, providing the patient with a functionally improved bite (occlusion).
If the main goal of the treatment is the dental displacement, most commonly a fixed multibracket therapy is used. In this case orthodontic wires are inserted into dental braces, which can be made from stainless steel or a more esthetic ceramic material.
Dental braces, with a powerchain, removed after completion of treatment. Also removable appliances, or "plates", headgear, expansion appliances, and many other devices can be used to move teeth. Functional and orthopaedics appliances are used in growing patients (age 5 to 13) with the aim to modify the jaw dimensions and relationship if these are altered. (See Prognathism.) This therapy is frequently followed by a fixed multibracket therapy to align the teeth and refine the occlusion.
Hawley retainers are the most common type of retainers. This picture shows retainers for the top and bottom of the mouth. After a course of active orthodontic treatment, patients will often wear retainers, which will maintain the teeth in their improved position while the surrounding bone reforms around them. The retainers are generally worn full-time for a short period, perhaps 6 months to a year, and then worn periodically (typically nightly during sleep) for as long as the orthodontist recommends. It is possible for the teeth to stay aligned without regular retainer wear. However, there are many reasons teeth will crowd as a person ages; thus there is no guarantee that teeth, orthodontically treated or otherwise, will stay aligned without retention. For this reason, many orthodontists recommend periodic retainer wear for many years (or indefinitely) after orthodontic treatment.
Reply:they have offices just like a dentist does.
Reply:Orhodontists typically have their own private practice, or participate in a group practice...like a Dental Group.
Reply:They have an office just like anyone else does. If they work independently they will have their practice in a stand alone orthodontist building or they may be part of a larger practice. My sons ortho has his own little clinic in a "house" looking clinic right next door to the high school here.

2. Did you go to collage for your job? what kind and courses did you take?
3. What is your yearly salary?
4. What social skills does your job require?
5. What are the every day things you deal with at your job?
6.What has been the most challenging obstacle at your job thus far?
7. On a scale of 1-10 how much do you like your job, and why is it your chosen career?
8. How many hours do you work in a week?
9. On a scale of 1-10, what is the stress level of your job? What are your dislikes about it?
10. Finally, if i were to try and pursue your career or one that is similar, what is the first thing I should Do?

1. None in particular...just took the courses I needed to graduate. Although I would recommend Biology and chemistry.
2. To get in to dental school...which is beyond college you have classes you need to take (alot of Biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physics).
3. Can't give you Mine :) but most dentists make between $120k and $150k Most orhtodontists make at least twice as much.
4. You need social skills more so in this profession than in medical because there are many dentists out there and most patients pick dentists they feel comfortable with.
5.Patients in pain...nervous patients...and of course the procedures themselves
6.Dealing with insurance companies...they tend to be tough to deal with and teaching patients the importance of good oral health
7. 9....I have always wanted to be a dentist...difficult to explain why...i really admired my dentist
8. 40...but most dentists work less
9. 7... Dentist are surgeons and surgery is stressful. I hate having to give children injections..it is as tough on me as it is on them.
10. If you are in high school....ask your dentist if you can shadow him for a day. This will give you an idea of what a dentist goes through each day. It will also give you a better idea if it something you could see yourself doing for a career.

Who is paid more, orthodontists or periodontists?
Orthodontists’ bills are paid directly by patients or their insurance companies. An orthodontist with an established practice can generate a great deal of money, but half or more of that money could go to pay for equipment, staff salaries, insurance, and other overhead costs.
Orthodontists who own their own practices must also pay their own their own health insurance, life insurance, and retirement benefits.
Even after these costs are taken into account, however, orthodontists have very good earnings. While precise figures are not available for Canadian orthodontists, most earn between $100,000 and $400,000 a year. However, remember that it takes many years of study to make it to this level of income, and many orthodontists have high levels of personal debt as a result.

Reply:I believe that it depends on your location of your practice and the experience that you have.
Referrels are the real key to having success
Reply:It usually depends on the location [rural or urban] of the office and the number of patients, since they're the ones that bring in the income. An entry wage ortho. earns about $45,000 a year. Experienced orthos. earn around $146,000 plus. Again, it depends on the location and patient.
Perios. earn around $50,000 a year. Not as much as an ortho.
If you're considering having a career in any of these fields, choose which one interests you the most, not the one that has the highest salary.
Reply:IT DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU ARE. ALSO THE QUALITY OF TREATMENT GIVEN. IF YOU DO SOMETHING GOOD, WORD GETS AROUND AND YOU GET MORE PATIENTS AND THEN MORE INCOME. FIRST LOVE WHAT YOU DO AND THEN YOU WILL SEE IT WILL PAY IN GOLD LATER
Reply:I myself am an orthodontist of 24 years experiance working. After looking at salery.com's claims of $400,000 a year pay for an average dentist of my profession I thought I had to amend this misconception, as many answers on this site on the subject quote this incorrect pay. Using myself as an example, a fully trained orthodontist of the top level with 24 years experiance, working in an area such as the San Francisco Bay area with high demand and an average of 20 new patiants per week, with an average of $5,000 per patiant makes an income of around $5,100,000 before the 33.3% tax and large medical cover and insurance. After this the figure is just over $2,000,000 per year. It's that good.

Help, are then any orthodontists from Minnesota here?
okay check this out. if you don't have insurance(like me) then maybe this is going to work 4 u. its called care credit. say for instance your braces cost $2,500, then your payment would be( depending on what you or your family could afford) a minimum of $75 a month.you can use this card for co payments deductables anything you need. no annual fees. you can even use it if your pet needs to go to the vet! cosmetic surgery, vision, chiropractor...
hope it works for u!

Why do nhs orthodontists have no funding?
They do have funding. Unfortunatly they are no longer able to treat mild cases. ie mild crowding etc..
Why do nhs orthodontists have no funding?
Our lovely government is the key
Reply:because the nhs is never given enough money in the budget!!!
Reply:really? Has it changed?
I got my brace free but that was nearly 20 years ago! Not that it did much. When my wisdom teeth came through, my teeth moved back. doh!
Reply:I hope everyone in the USA who reads these complaints about the NHS will realize that "National Health Care for Everyone" is NOT the way to do things.

How do dentsits/ orthodontists fix over-bites?
I had a very bad over-bite in 4th grade and they used braces. I only had them on for 2 years and I got them taken off in 6th grade. Then I had to wear retainers..... I never had to wear headgear.... but i did have to wear the rubber bands that hook onto your braces... good luck!
How do dentsits/ orthodontists fix over-bites?
pretty sure they use braces...
Reply:I had a huge overbite, i still have my braces, you usually get braces, headgear (overnight only, dont worry) and then elastics from top to bottom of your teeth.

Does anyone out there know anything about braces? Any dentists/orthodontists?
I've have upper and lower fixed braces for a year now. After having them for a while I was told to use elastic bands, and at my appointment today I was told I'd no longer need to use elastic bands, and my orthodontist fixed some kind of metal bands where to elastics went.
What are these are WHY ARE THEY HURTING TO BAD?! I knew it'd feel tight but it's really hurting, and i'm not normally badly affected by pain. It's really awful and my teeth are numb.
Is there anything I can do?
Does anyone out there know anything about braces? Any dentists/orthodontists?
They're hurting because your teeth are moving. The bone is shifting. Just try and grin and bear it. Take some Advil for the pain and try to wait it out. I know braces aren't easy and I know this isn't the answer you're looking for. But, it's the truth. Just think, you'll have a gorgeous smile for a lifetime when this temporary pain is overwith.
Reply:Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and I have seen this many times. The elastics are a soft way to move the teeth. Less painful and have give. The metal bands do not and when they were tightened to move the teeth, there is no give. So the teeth will be sore and hurt for a few days. Take any over the counter pain relief that you have in the past. Apply ice packs to your jaw and relax. Eat ice cream and cool drinks. Your teeth are not numb, they just feel that way. This is normal. Getting upset will make it hurt more. This is common. By tomorrow it should stop. At your next visit tell your Ortho how much it hurt and ask him if he can go a little slower. Remember you will have braces until all the teeth are moved into position. Some people will go the pain to get out sooner. But I feel no pain, no pain is my motto. I'm a coward LOL. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
Reply:I don't. Make sure you get opinions from at least 2 orthodontists.

2 more braces???? do you mean brackets? That would make more sense typically braces are on average kept on for 2 years although it all depends on the complexity of your case...I only had mine on for 9 months =)

How much do orthodontists make off of braces?
I am talking about traditional, metal ones. They usually charge around 6,000 per mouth, so how much are they profiting from it? How much does the braces cost them to buy? Very curious. Thanks.
How much do orthodontists make off of braces?
As someone who owned and operated a commercial Dental Laboratory for 20 years followed by operating a private Denturist practice for another 22 years I'm well aware of dental fees both wholesale and retail...You can take just about any type of dental appliance you want, denture, crown, partial denture, veneer facing, veneer crown or orthodontics and the retail in the average dentists office will be from 5 times the Lab fee to as much as 10 times the Lab fee. In my Lab I created hundreds of sets of dentures that dentist paid me $200 for and charged their patient $2500 .Crowns that cost the dentist $60 each was billed to the patient at $500 each. I created orthodontic retainers for $65 and the patient was charged $300.
Reply:It depends on how much work needs to be done on the teeth. For example, my younger daughter has naturally straight teeth but also has a gap between her two front teeth that she hates. She wants to get braces to close it up. Braces in her case would not cost a great deal. In the case of her older sister, she had an open bite due to thumbsucking and tongue thrusting. Her treatment was quite complicated. She had to get two teeth pulled and wear braces for more than two years. Her braces cost around $5000 but insurance helped defray the costs. She got her braces taken off about a year and a half ago but still needs to wear a retainer. If she goes for an extended period of time without that retainer, she says she can tell that her teeth have moved.

Why do some orthodontists insist on extractions when there is no crowding?
This is an old fashioned orthodontic technique to get a sub standard result. When you pull teeth that don't need to be pulled, you are left with gaps and a sunken profile that is aesthetically displeasing and hard on your jaw. There are better ways. Look for an orthodontist who chooses a no extraction method. This is successful in 90 to 95 % of cases and the end result is a fabulous, movie star smile with no gaps and great occlusion(teeth fit together great).
Why do some orthodontists insist on extractions when there is no crowding?
Because they are greedy.
Reply:to pull your teeth down and make your smile wider.
Reply:You should ask them the exact reason they are suggesting extractions.
If you have a severe over-bite. It may appear right now that there is no over crowding but your maxilla may be too small to move all your teeth back enough to correct the over-bite. I have no idea what your situation is but that could be one possible reason.
Reply:Golly gee........there are a couple possibilities.
If they want to extract baby teeth, it is because the X-rays show the adult teeth under the gums are going to be too big for the opening that the baby tooth will leave, thus he is averting a crowded situation.
If it is adult teeth that are not yet completely grown, the X-rays probably show a potential for crowding thus making the teeth crowd in the near future and become crooked.
It is his job to prevent or cure the crooked teeth, repair or prevent an overbite or underbite, etc.
Hope this helps somewhat.
I always tell my patients to feel more than free to ask their doctor (in this case the dentist) any questions they may have. After all, it is THEIR body (or teeth) that is being worked on and they have the right to understand EVERYTHING that is going on to their satisfaction and understanding. OK???
I am an RN

OK???

How much do Orthodontists Earn?
i havent gotten such a good answer for this, like how much can you make per month or so for your paycheck?or yearly? im confused about it. I'm someone who wants to be one, one day.
How much do Orthodontists Earn?
Check out http://salary.com . Using the Salary Wizard (which is free...no sign up required) enter the job title Orthodontist and the zip code of the area in which you will be working. This will tailor the results to your geographic area (salaries vary widely by region). Median salary was about $130,000 per year for suburban Philadelphia.
Good luck.
Reply:i found the median online to be $115,000. i think it has to be much higher, though. that's not bad, but not great these days. i bet it's more like $200,000. dentistry is boring, but orthodontics is great!! i think braces are fun :) back when had braces, the orthodontist was actually a cool place to go.

Dental specialists and orthodontists please help...?
for braces, are there certain teeth you will NOT instruct the patient to put dental elastics on? like if a strong force is on said teeth it would cause a lot of problems eg pinched nerves, facial imbalance etc.?
thank you so much!
Dental specialists and orthodontists please help...?
The placement of elastics is differs from patient to patient, depending on the malocclusion. Elastics are used to bring the lower jaw forward, correct midlines shifts, close open bites correct cross bites, etc. So it depends on the patient. It is highly unlikely that it would cause a pinched nerve. As for facial imbalance,it would not happen in a month,so if you have any concerns speak to your dentist.
Good Luck

What do dentists/orthodontists usually do...?
What do they usually do before they put braces on? About four months ago I found out I'm getting braces in February. What's the process they go through before actually putting the braces on?
What do dentists/orthodontists usually do...?
The doctor will take a look at how your teeth are arranged and look at ways to slowly move your teeth into better alignment. There's all kinds of braces, from the heavy duty ones to the light invisible ones. They attach these braces to your teeth and slowly (usually over a period of a year or more) bring your teeth into perfect alignment. Getting used to them takes a little while, but after a while you eventually forget they are there, until the time comes for them to be removed. That's the day that makes it all worth while as your smile shines!
Best wishes!
Reply:um they clean your mouth then they do a mold of your mouth if they haven't already( i hate that part)then they get started with the braces. it's not too bad it doesn' hurt until afterwards cause you start to feel all the pressure on your teeth then it goes to your head but, just take some tylenol and you'll be fine. There's not too much to it good luck though.
Reply:well they usually make a mold of your teeth, take some xrays of them--for before and after stuff.
my orthodontists did something different from others- they took the mold of my teeth and created this thin filmy/mouth guard looking thing that i put on and the braces just melted on to my teeth..it was really awesome that they didnt have to glue each brace on each tooth...but yeah just make sure to relax when they make of mold of your teeth cause alot of people freak out and start to gag on it....good luck!

How do orthodontists take out spacers? I get my spacers out tomorrow around...1:30 and I'm getting braces.
Also, what color should I get them?
How do orthodontists take out spacers? I get my spacers out tomorrow around...1:30 and I'm getting braces.
spacers are pretty much rubber bands around your back teeth to space them out. all they do is pull them out. i had it done before and it doesnt hurt a bit.
i got blue my first time.
IMPORTANT COLORS NOT TO GET!!!
DONT GET:
-yellow(makes it look like corn is in your teeth)
-clear(it gets discolored... ew)
p.s. the worse part about braces is the spacers first put in and the pain that week. other than that nothing
Reply:You obviously have spacers ..so you have NOT been able to floss between those teeth until they are removed. All spacers generally are is a hard little rubber band that fits between the teeth to create a space for your ortho bands. They are very easy to remove and it doesn't hurt at all.
As far as the colored tie elastics..purple and pink were my faves . don't use a clear, yellow or natural colored ones..they stain and the yellow one gets darker. Not a pretty sight..actually makes your teeth look kind of dirty. So..that in mind..stay with the bolder colors and ENJOY your braces.
Take care
Reply:They just use a dental pick to pluck them out. Then they let you brush your teeth and they put the bands on your molars. Purple, gold, red, green, pink, are all good colors. Good luck!
Reply:mine popped out the first day by themselves
Reply:they either floss them out or use a dental pick to cathc the end and wiggle them out

Why do orthodontists?
after u get braces removed embarrass u by makin u wear retainers? would u **** them hard?
Why do orthodontists?
hmm... let's see. you have spent upwards of 3-5 thousand dollars of your parents money to straighten your teeth. after wearing the braces for 1-3 years, you finally want to get them off and be free. the catch is that you will never be free. there is no turning back. if you do not wear reatainers on the upper and lower teeth forever, the teeth will return to their original position or something worse or something in between... this process will not happen overnight, but it will happen if you don't wear the reatainers. once you go about a week or 2 without wearing the retainer, it won't fit or it will be very tight. you'll either not wear it again or need to get a new one made. i think you see my point.

Att. Dentists, orthodontists, etc. I am doing an 8th grade science project.?
In this project I am going to soak real teeth in pop, tea, coffee, etc. I need to know what I can use or if I can measure how the tooth decays (weight). Also you know how a dentist pokes your teeth to see if you have cavities and if the "poker" sticks you do. Can you measure that in an extracted tooth?
Att. Dentists, orthodontists, etc. I am doing an 8th grade science project.?
You will not really be able to create a cavity in time for your science fair. Besides, the sugar in the Coke (whatever) would need some live bacteria on the tooth to interact with, so you won't be able to "grow" a cavity under lab conditions at home. You MIGHT be able to etch the tooth with the acid content of the Coke, but do not count on showing any damage that you can attribute ot the sugar.
Etching is the first step of tooth decay, though, so this might be acceptable. You need to understand what is going on and know how to explain it, though. Etching would show up as a very slight change in the appearance of the enamel surface. It would look sort of frosty white. The thing is, you would need an unetched surface to compare it to, or you probably would not notice any difference. Maybe you could put the tooth half-way under the liquid, hoping to etch one side and not the other. This may take a long time, though, as in probably a few days.
If you type "caries etiology" into a search, you will find over 15,000 articles to help explain how cavities are formed.
As far as weighing the tooth, this is not a bad idea, but the amount of weight change would so infinitesimally small that I doubt you have access to a scale that could detect it.
Reply:I hope you are able to come up with a good project in time... Report It
Reply:It cannot be measured in an extracted tooth.

Attention Dentists/Orthodontists! I have a question for you!?
I'm 19, and I really want to get braces (I don't want to be 30 years old with a mouth full of metal..), but as I need to pay for them myself, and I'm already paying for my college tuition among other things, I don't know if I can afford them. Can you give me an estimate of appx. how much you think they cost? Ballpark estimate...I live in Chicago. My mouth doesn't need surgery, I have no overbite, no spaces..they're just a little crooked, so I don't think it's one of those cases where extensive work is needed. So what do you think a something like that could amount to financially? And how long is a mild case generally required to wear braces for? Also, can you give me an estimate on how much you generally charge people for invisalign? And are they happy with that? Thanks
Attention Dentists/Orthodontists! I have a question for you!?
about 3000. in chicago it could be as high as 5000. you'll make about $150 monthly payments though.
don't get invisalign. braces work faster and they're cheaper.
Reply:between 3000-5000 depending on how much movement you will need.
typically they want a percentage down and then you make monthly payments.
there's nothing wrong tho with being 30 and having braces!

Question for orthodontists about triangle rubberbands for braces?
I wear class 2 rubberbands on my braces, but I was wondering what the triangle configuration is for? I know that class 2 are supposed to fix an overbite, but what do the triangles do? Thanks!
Question for orthodontists about triangle rubberbands for braces?
If it's to fix the overbite, it helps to pull your upper jaw back. No, I'm not an orthodontist, but I've had braces.

Why do orthodontists put spacers in before u get ur braces??
To spread your teeth apart to put in the bands. You'll find that toward the end of it, the spacers will be loose and possibly falling out.
Why do orthodontists put spacers in before u get ur braces??
space for the thickness of the band
Reply:to make room to put your braces in otherwise it would hurt like hell
i have spacers right now are they r killing me
Reply:to make a little spce before the band that fits over the first molar is placed. for this band to fit over the molar there must be space around it.
Reply:They put the spacers on so when you get the band put on , it doesn't have to hurt as bad . There will be room for the band to fit with the spacers.

At an orthodontists office, the girls that put the brackets on, what are they called?
She is an orthodontist assisitant. Also known as an orthodontic assisitant.
An assistant's main duty is to help the orthodontic specialist by performing much of the “hands-on” work needed to adjust braces. In addition, they take x-rays, make impressions of teeth, take high quality photographs of patient faces and teeth and interact with patients and their families.

Reply:Dental assistants are the ones that can place the archwires and the little colored circles that hold the archwires in place. The person that actually cements the brackets onto the tooth is the orthodontist. Dental hygienists are usually not employed by orthodontists, as they are "cleaning" specialists, and employed by general dentists and periodontists.

Why do orthodontists take pictures, but the majority of other specialty doctors don't?
I would think that Orthodontist take X-rays because your teeth are subject to move or be knocked out. If you have evidence of what it used to look like then the teeth can be rebuilt the way they were. X-rays for broken bones are to tell where the fracture is and what type of cast/brace will be needed to keep it put until it heals.
Why do orthodontists take pictures, but the majority of other specialty doctors don't?
Um...well dentists take X-Rays, dermatologists take pictures sometimes. I'm not sure what else you want to know about.
Reply:It depends on the legal / insurance situation and the background of the dentist.
When medico legal situations warrent it , most dentists will take pictures to document the case. Also if your dentist is a professor or working at college, he might be documenting to write a paper or thesis on a particular aspect of the subject.
Insurance requirements also make it compulsory for the dentist to document cases accurately. Other than this an Orthodontist might just want to keep the 'before and after pictures' to educate other patients or even show it the concerned patient itself. Sometimes the treatment may take 2 years and memory is short to remember how it was at the start.
Dental docmentation also serves occassionally in accidental deaths where bodies are damaged beyond recognition and teeth are only means of identification by matching dental records. Branch / speciality also called as 'Forensic dentistry'
Reply:We take pictures because we like to play with cameras. Oh, and did I mention that it's fun to actually see the before and after progress of our fabulous treatment.

Ok the BIG dance is comeing up is it alright to take out my retainer for like 5-6 hours??
ive had mine since october
Calling all orthodontists!?
You will be alright as long as you don't make it a habit to not wear your retainers. That would cause problems. Sometimes I don't wear mine to school (6 hours) but I usually wear them. You will be fine this one time.

How do orthodontists take braces off?
i've heard it can bleed....do they just pull them off? or use something to unstick the glue stuff?does it hurt more than getting the tightened?
How do orthodontists take braces off?
they take this thing that kinda looks like pliers and they gently clip on yur braces and it comes off without any pain! dont worry =] ive had braces and it did not hurt at all! and getting it tightened is the worse feeling, getting them off comes no where near that.
Reply:They pretty much just rip them right out of your mouth, very bloody, don't wear anything nice.
Reply:you have nothing to worry about trust me. i had braces for two years i thought the same thing but it doesnt hurt at all trust me
Reply:They bend the prongs first and then each one "pops" off. There is a small tool that can be compared to a chisel that is used to assist them in popping them off. If they miss and the chisel-like thing hits your gums, yes it could bleed. That requires them missing though. Yes, it happens, but not often, and even when it does, it doesn't hurt unless they REALLY miss badly.
You'll be fine :-)
Reply:they use plier thingy that "pop" the bracket off by breaking the glue, then polish ur teeth to remove excess glue

How do orthodontists put in spacers?
I know this is a silly question, but I have to get spacers...in 2 days. And when we got a second opinion, he said that my back teeth were near perfect. And if that was the case wouldn't that be hard?
How do orthodontists put in spacers?
Rubber spacers are inserted between your teeth to make room around your tooth. I don't know what you mean by "near perfect" but it shouldn't be hard for your orthodontist to insert the spacers because there is a nifty tool they use to do it. And spacer's just create space between your teeth, just enough to do what the ortho needs to do, it won't damage your teeth or make your smile any less beautiful, so there shouldn't be too many reasons to argue over having them inserted--one reason to argue is if you aren't having any "hardware" fixed to ur teeth (like braces).
When I got braces, they put spacers between my molars and it was only a dull ache that tylenol or IBprof fixed in no time.
Reply:Don't worry. It doesn't hurt. Just a LITTLE bit. They are small rubber bands that they put on a little tool so the rubber band gets right in the middle of two teeth.
Reply:usually they just put like some elastic bands between your teeth to push them apart. Some dentists use a little metal piece. That way they can put the band around your teeth more easily.
Reply:they sorta push them in, and it feels like you have a piece of food between your teeth that you cannot take out. and they REALLY make your mouth sore. they hurt more than the braces. o course, i had 16 spacers. if you only are getting 2 or 4, it might not be nearly as bad. good luck!
Reply:Getting them in doesn't hurt. however, after about 3 hours of it, they start to hurt pretty bad. It would be a good idea to take some pain medication and eat soft food.
They usually have an orthodontic assistant do this, but it could be your orthodontist. What they do is take tiny blue rubber bands and stretch them out with the two arms of a tweezer-like tool. The rubber bands are then wedged in between your four second molars. If they can't get them in this way, they put a piece of floss through the rubber band and floss the area they want to put it in. The floss is removed and the rubber band stays.
The purpose of spacers is to make room for your bands. Bands are metal rings that go around your second molars. These can have either tubes connected the the outsides or flat hooks. Usually, the top jaw will have two with tubes and the bottom will have two with hooks.
It'll feel like you have food stuck between your teeth, but after a few days you get used to it. Spacers are the most annoying aspect of braces, in my opinion. You will be very relieved when they're out. Try not to pick at them! If you manage to remove them, the process will have to start all over.
Good luck!
Reply:I had to get spacers last spring and I thought i would be dying from pain but it's not that bad. The dentist just slips it on with some metal thing and hat doesn't hurt, just maybe like there's a piece of meat between your teeth or something. After that it hurts if you bite on it or chew but only for a few days. After a week you don't even knew it's there. One of mine fell off and I didn't even realize it.
Reply:it feels like a big piece of meat is stuck in your teeth that you cant get out and it gets soo annoying that you just wanna take a toothpick and take it out BUT you cant and you will have to deal with it lol
i got my braces off 2 weeks ago and all of that pain was worth it now my smile is priceless %26lt;(^_^)%26gt; lol

Question for orthodontists/ Dentists about spacers???
Hello! I just got my spacers on today for braces. I was just wondering, do they usually put the bands on teeth that have crowns on them, I would think this would damage the crown, but they put the spacers on either side of a tooth I have a crown on, will it be ok?
Question for orthodontists/ Dentists about spacers???
LIZ,
DON'T BE WORRIED AT ALL ABOUT THIS WON'T CAUSE ANY DAMAGE TO THE CROWN.
BE SURE TO BUY AND USE A WATERPIK MACHINE DAILY TO KEEP EVERYTHING CLEAN AND TIDY.
YOUR ORTHODONTIST WILL BE HAPPILY SURPRISED.
Reply:Yes, you can put a band around a tooth with a crown on it, that should not damage the crown the cement can be removed when you are done with braces.

WHat do orthodontists do if you have an overbite how do they fix it?
It depends on how bad the overbite is. When I was a kid, I had braces on my teeth, and at night I wore a headgear. It had wires that attached at the back of my braces and came out at the corners of my mouth. It had a strap that went around the back of my neck and attached to the wires. Every month or two, the orthodontist would evaluate my progress and have me adjust the strap tighter. The device was painful and very difficult to sleep in. That was about 20 years ago. I hope they have something better now.

I had this mouth piece with little wings that hung down. my jaw had to lock into it to cose, which forced my jaw forward. over time, it worked. but this was in the 80's when I was young. rubber bands on my regular braces was used too. There are many more options nowadays then there used to be. Good luck!

How do orthodontists put braces on you?
Do they put some kind of sand in your mouth?
Will it hurt after i get them put on?
Will I talk diffrently?
How do orthodontists put braces on you?
Generally, orthodontists can straighten your teeth by bonding brackets to the front of your teeth. They have a very strong glue which holds small metal fittings onto your teeth. Bonding the brackets onto your teeth does not hurt at all. The pain come when the orthodontist fits the "arch wire" into the brackets. The arch wire will put force onto the brackets which in turn causes your teeth to move to where the orthodontist wants them. This soreness goes away after a few days, but returns when you go back to the orthodontist to have the arch wire adjusted. (About every month or two).
--However, in certain cases, your orthodontist can't attach the brackets with glue. In these instances the orthodontist must use the old-fashioned "bands" which encircle the tooth. That process does cause soreness. It also requires preparation: "spreaders" must be put in a couple weeks in advance to make room between teeth to install the bands.
In my case, I had to have bands on my lower molars due to the fact that they are crowned, and bonded brackets were unsuitable.
I don't know where you got the sand idea, but in the case of bands a dental cement is used which is kind of gritty.
As for speaking differently: No, not really. Everything will feel a bit different for a few days. Sometimes the wire and brackets will give you sores inside your lips, like canker sores. But you will speak clearly.
Reply:Sand? Umm, no, no sand...
the dr will take an "impression" of your mouth/teeth, they'll tell you "oh this is like whipped cream" but basically it's this rubbery squishy stuff. You dont taste it, it's in little forms that you bite down on. Then they'll use that to design the wires that best suit your condition.
I had full metal jacket braces--the mean ugly ones--but they didnt hurt and I didnt talk differently or anything.
Some people can have the glue on ones, those are almost invisible.
The most important thing is to brush, brush and BRUSH YOUR TEETH a MINIMUM of 3x a day and ALWAYS after eating...otherwise you could get those gross white marks on your teeth and those DO NOT COME OFF!
Reply:doesn't matter. you'll get used to them
Reply:LOL my sister just got hers on today...so...
They lay you down, simi clean your teeth. They put this blue cement coating on your teeth, where the brackets go. Then they put on the brackets and use this UV light to harden the cement. Painless but it takes awile. Some people get a palet spreader, again does not hurt but VERY annoying. You wont be able to talk, eat, or swallow for a week or two. After they put the braces on, yes they hurt. So I would suggest bringing advil, and eat before you go to the dentist.
Reply:They use differing methods depending upon the types of movement they require to get your teeth straight. They may use different appliances during stages of your orthodontic treatment. Some may be uncomfortable at first but you will get used to them.
There may be some pain but you can take meds for that and you may talk differently. In the end though, it will be worth the effort. Just make sure that your wisdom teeth don't mess up the work after getting your braces off.
Reply:I don't know where you got the sand idea.
They just glue brackets onto your teeth. Then a wire attaches to each of the brackets, and maybe special rubber bands, and over time that moves your teeth into alignment.
It's been a LONG time since I had braces, but I seem to remember your mouth is a little sore until you're used to them.
Reply:First, they put this cement on your teeth. Then, they put the bracets on where the cement was. Then they snap the wire on the brackets. You may feel pressure throughout this process (Especsially when they snap the wire on) No they don't put sand in your mouth.Yes,it will hurt for up to a week at the most.(I suggest taking Advil or Tylenol) Your friends might notice a small difference in your talking but don't get worried about it.

Many years ago (long, long before I entered the dental profession), the brackets were not bonded to your teeth. Instead, they were part of a band/bracket unit. So basically, every tooth that was supposed to be moved got one of these metal bands placed around it.
Thank God for materials science and their discovery of enamel bonding. Nowadays, most brackets are bonded directly to your teeth, with only the first molars being banded (for added strength, I guess).
An acid etch (usually 40% phosphoric acid) is applied to the area where the bracket will be bonded. This acid cleans out the various materials that are stuck to your microscopic enamel rods, and also removes the outermost surface, making the enamel more porous.
An enamel bonding material is applied to the etched surface and light cured, followed by the resin cement (which nowadays is often already placed on the bracket itself.
The same light is used to cure the resin cement, and the bracket is firmly attached.
Removal is as simple as pulling it off and cleaning off the excess cement.
No, the bonding process doesn't hurt, but the pressure applied to the teeth generally does.
