Does anyone out there know anything about braces? Any dentists/orthodontists?

I've have upper and lower fixed braces for a year now. After having them for a while I was told to use elastic bands, and at my appointment today I was told I'd no longer need to use elastic bands, and my orthodontist fixed some kind of metal bands where to elastics went.

What are these are WHY ARE THEY HURTING TO BAD?! I knew it'd feel tight but it's really hurting, and i'm not normally badly affected by pain. It's really awful and my teeth are numb.

Is there anything I can do?

They're hurting because your teeth are moving. The bone is shifting. Just try and grin and bear it. Take some Advil for the pain and try to wait it out. I know braces aren't easy and I know this isn't the answer you're looking for. But, it's the truth. Just think, you'll have a gorgeous smile for a lifetime when this temporary pain is overwith.
Reply:Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and I have seen this many times. The elastics are a soft way to move the teeth. Less painful and have give. The metal bands do not and when they were tightened to move the teeth, there is no give. So the teeth will be sore and hurt for a few days. Take any over the counter pain relief that you have in the past. Apply ice packs to your jaw and relax. Eat ice cream and cool drinks. Your teeth are not numb, they just feel that way. This is normal. Getting upset will make it hurt more. This is common. By tomorrow it should stop. At your next visit tell your Ortho how much it hurt and ask him if he can go a little slower. Remember you will have braces until all the teeth are moved into position. Some people will go the pain to get out sooner. But I feel no pain, no pain is my motto. I'm a coward LOL. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
Reply:I don't. Make sure you get opinions from at least 2 orthodontists.
