An assistant's main duty is to help the orthodontic specialist by performing much of the “hands-on” work needed to adjust braces. In addition, they take x-rays, make impressions of teeth, take high quality photographs of patient faces and teeth and interact with patients and their families.

Reply:Dental assistants are the ones that can place the archwires and the little colored circles that hold the archwires in place. The person that actually cements the brackets onto the tooth is the orthodontist. Dental hygienists are usually not employed by orthodontists, as they are "cleaning" specialists, and employed by general dentists and periodontists.
