Orthodontists, Dentists, People with retainers or have had retainers, please help me with this one?

I have one of those retainers that are glued to my teeth. It has made some cuts on my toungue that are annoying and painful.





Will they ever go away?





If I can heal them in anyway, how?

The composite material that is used to hold the fixed retainer in place should cover the wire completely at the ends of the metal on both the canine teeth. It sounds as if they didn't get yours covered good or finish down and smoothed causing it to cut your tongue. This is not correct and needs to be adjusted as soon as possible. Call your orthodontist and let them know so they can get you in and add more material and smooth it out so it won't be rough to your tongue. In the mean time use some really warm salt water rinses, and if you have any wax left you can try to cover it, although your tongue is going to pull it off after a few minutes. So be sure to call today and see if they can work you in, as this is Thursday and they may be closed for the weekend after today. The retainer is suppose to be comfortable, no cutting edges or rough areas, only small bumps of the composite material at the back of each anterior tooth is all you should feel and after awhile you don't even notice it. Reply:They'll heal by themselves, you just have to stop thinking about them.





It's pretty much impossible to stop, but you will eventually, and they will heal.
Reply:You may wish to go back to the orthodontist for an adjustment. And, ask if they can give you (or you can get some at a local drug store) some orthodontic wax. You just take a small piece of it and place it over the part of the appliance that is annoying you.
