Orthodontists/ dentists question about braces???

I have a missing molar (#31), will I be able to get braces in order to move the molar behind forward?

When I went to have the tooth pulled, the dentist said that the space could be fixed with braces, but I didn't ask more about it at the time. What would this procedure entail (time length, treatment, etc.)? Also, what do they use to close the space up? Is it just regular braces, or is there something they use specifically for that?-Thanks!

Orthodontists/ dentists question about braces???
Hi Liz,

I suggest you have a consultation with an orthodontist in your area. More than likely, the space can be closed up with the use of braces and springs or elastics. Because the molars are very hard to move, it might take a few years to move. But it can be done. See an orthodontist for more details.
Reply:I will begin by directly answering your question. Yes, you will be able to get braces with no difficulty.

Now for the explanation. There is no special "equipment" that your orthodontist will use to manuveur your teeth into position in addition to regular braces. Sometimes orthodontists use rubber bands (they look like miniature hairbands) that attach to the braces in order to pull teeth in a certain direction.

The length of time this takes is typically between 1 and 3 years. The reason that the process takes so long is due to the fact that your teeth need to be slowly pulled into place. This avoids imposing damage to the roots of your teeth (roots are those annoying things that make biting into ice cream slightly painful).

My main point is primarily to reassure you that this process is very common. Don't worry, your orthodontist will be able to help to get a beautiful smile minus any torturous devices. Good luck!
