Being an Orthodontist/ Dentist?

I am a highschool sophomore and have been extremely interested in becoming an orthodontist or dentist for a very long time. What are some important qualities I should have and what kind of classes should I take in highschool to prepare myself if I should take up this career?

Being an Orthodontist/ Dentist?
You need to have the desire and ability to work with and help people. You need to be caring and compassionate, with a desire to work hard and learn lots.

Dentistry is a great profession. Most of us set our own hours, own our own businesses and have our destiny on our hands. Dental school is expensive and difficult. Loans are available and the work can be done if you have the desire and discipline. Running a dental practice is stressful and expensive, but if you are willing to work hard and help your neighbors, it is very rewarding.

Go to the American Dental Association website. (www.ada.org) There is a page with links to all the schools in the US. Contact them to determine their requirements. You should also contact your undergraduate University to determine the requirements that you will need from High school to attend their programs. The ADA also should be able to direct you to literature to help you learn about the profession.

One big suggestion that helped me was visiting and spending time with my dentist. Spend a few days there, see what s/he does on a daily basis. It will help a lot to learn about dentistry (and it will look good on your application).
