First orthodontist appointment?

What do they do at your first orthodontist appointment if you exspected to get braces?

And how do they put on braces? (normal metle ones with the coloured rings)

First orthodontist appointment?
Well, when I went to my first appointment, its basically a consultation. The ortho examined my teeth and made notes in my file. All my information like x-rays, dental history from my general dentist, models of my teeth and face portriats was sent to him prior so that made it an easy process as he read up on my file prior. And your time to ask questions about the procedure. At my consultation, I have my treatment cost and payment plan set up.

When they put the brackets on, my assistant cleaned my teeth, smoothed it, glued the bracket on and put the wire in...its a lengthy process and you have an annoying mouth piece in your mouth that pinches the back of your mouth....it was a little painful, but overall it was ok.
Reply:I don't remember exactly since my first appointment was when I was 10 years old, but I believe the Orthodontist does an exam on your teeth, then they do some x-rays, then they do impressions...which are mouthpieces filled with a goopy mold that make you gag really bad. Well at least I gag really bad since I have a terrible reflex. And then they take you back into the room to talk about what you'll be having done, but I'm not sure if that's the first or second appointment, since they have to wait for the x-rays and molds of your teeth to come back.

When they put them on, I remember them getting the brackets, putting cement on them, and then sticking them on each tooth. Then they have this ultraviolet looking device that they stick on there and it beeps when each bracket is done drying. I'm just assuming that's what the little gun thingy is for. It doesn't hurt, just beeps and gets really annoying after hearing it a billion times. Then they'll stick a wire through the brackets and tie wires around each one to tighten them. I always would say I was going to pick up radio signals because before they cut all the wires down they stick out of your mouth and look really funny.

In the end, all the pain is worth it though. I'm still scared to go to the orthodontist (I'm 21, have had my braces off for 6 years and am going next wednesday to get my permanent retainer on my bottom teeth taken out). I haven't been back in three years and I have such a phobia of dentists and orthodontists but it'll be all right when you see the end result! Good luck!
Reply:well i just had mine put on yesterday so i can remember pretty well,

1st they wash your teeth with this horrible tasting water and then they dry your teeth, you have to lay there and bite on this tube for ages while it sucks your mouth, keeping it dry.they then put the hooks on at the back (this is where the arch wire starts and finishes) they then rub this glue all over your teeth and clean most of it off. then they put one bracket on each of your teeth. then they put these wires on each of your hooks (there are 4) they twist and fiddle about with them and clip them off. then the arch wire is placed and the ligatures or ''coloured rings) are placed over the top of the arch wire.

thats it your done, it only takes around 25 minuites. but it isn't pain free the next day is agony and i'm just waiting for tomorrow fingers crossed it won't hurt as bad.

also its a good idea to buy the braces care kit with all the little tooth brushes in and that and also buy plenty of wax, you will need it, because you do tend to get little sores from the brackets rubbing on your cheeks.

get a blender! mix your foods for the first week, you can't eat solid foods.

i know all this sounds bad but just think at the end of the day you will have perfect teeth.

at your very first orthadontic appointment they will take an x-ray and impressions. this is like putty and they put it in your mouth to see where all your teeth are placed, to make the braces. to have the x-ray you have to bite on this little stick thing, its really nothing to worry about, your 1st appointment is pain free.

you may be asked to have some teeth extracted or have a different brace to move the teeth slightly before having your fixed brace.

the best thing is everytime you go to have your fixed brace tightened (every 4-8 weeks) you can have different coloured o- rings.

well anyways hope this helped

*hugs*xxxx good luck
