We took him to two different orthodontist for a consultation. One recommends doing an extender first and then braces. If the extender doesn't work we may need to talk about pulling teeth. The other orthodontist just recommended braces only and never mentioned maybe needing to pull teeth. The first one said the extender helps so that later in life the gums don't recede. What would you do?
Should I have the orthodontist put an extender in my 15 year olds upper teeth?
It would depend on why the one Orthodontist wants to put in the extender. Does your 15 year old have a lot of crowding? If so, they you will probably want to go with the extender (it could be like my 9 year old - at the time- who had a lot of crowding and not enough room for her teeth to come in. She has had the extender and the first run of braces (even then there may have to be some permanent teeth removed, including the wisdom teeth).
Me I had 4 perm ant teeth pulled before my braces and all 4 wisdom teeth pulled later.
Reply:I take it that you child has crowded teeth? If so, then a tooth pull, then extender to fill in the gap, then braces to straighten everything out.
Extenders are used to evenly space teeth where there are gaps.
Really not enough info to give a really good answer.
If orthodontist can get everything right with only braces, it is cheaper and won't take as long.
Reply:well... i had expanders or extenders in my teeth if im thinking of the same thing there little bands that go between ur teeth before braces it kinda hurts but its more like a pain where u wanna grind and push down really hard on ur teeth i was given something to chew on by the ortho unless ts what my sister had she had something that looked like a retainer and she had to put a key in it and tighten it or something weird either way both me and my sister had to get teeth pulled to make room for our teeth to move.
i had 4 teeth pulled 2 on top and 2 on botton it doesnt really hurt this was around my 5th grade year so do the math of age lol. but yea i hope this helped.
