Braces....Dentist or Orthodontist?

My child needs braces. My dentist does braces and quoted me a price. I went to an orthodontist to get a second opinion. The cost was more, but I was told by the orthodontist that they specialized in braces, but a dentist does not. Is it worth the extra money?

Braces....Dentist or Orthodontist?
Absolutely! Most dentists will send patients to an orthodontist. Remember, you get what you pay for. Since an orthodontist is a specialist, he will know what to do if a problem arises.
Reply:ortho
Reply:far as i know only a orthadontist even does braces, the dentist is suppose to refer you to one
Reply:yes it is worth
Reply:Don't know. I've never really heard of a dentist doing braces. Maybe ask him for references of people he has placed braces on in the past to see how they turned out.
Reply:depends..ask your dentist if she/he was trained to do braces...

if so it will be the same...

if not...then go with the orthodontist..

but most of the time your dentist is supposed to recommend a ortho/...so i say your best shot is with an orthodeontist
Reply:Of course, Orthodontist's the best option!
Reply:an orthodontist specializes in braces...i think it's better to go for the ortho...they have more experience
Reply:definitely an orthodontist, actually i have never heard before of dentists making braces. he could be ok but i wouldnt take the risk because i am not in a position to judge by myself if the braces the dentist offers me are the right ones. besides after u put on the braces u need follow-ups, someone who will monitor the child's course and again the orthodontist is the expert here. if money is a very important issue for u why dont u try to negotiate the price a bit by telling him the actual price the dentist offered :)
Reply:its always better to go to a specialized doctor.. your regular doctor CAN do the work but it might take more time for your child to have braces.. if you're worried about the amount of time your child have braces.. i would say stick with the dentist.. there's no big difference..
Reply:I definitely think that the orthodontist is worth the extra money. They have a lot more training, and if something goes wrong, they would probably be better equipped to handle it. Also, they have likely handled many more cases than the dentist has, and experience always shows. Braces suck, and you want to get them off in the least amount of time with the best results.
Reply:I'm adult who just got braces off. I went to an orthodontist and would never trust a dentist to take care of my orthodontic needs. Orthodontists specialize in straightening teeth and dentists are more general.
Reply:go to the ortho~~more $$$ but worth it~~~
Reply:We faced this exact same dilemma. My husband works in the dental field (not a dentist) and we chose the orthodontist because they are the ones who fix the dentists problems if/when the braces go wrong. In saying that, if it's not a complicated case a dentist is just fine (meaning just straightening a few teeth, not bite corrections or jaw problems). Also something to think about "If you had a brain tumor would you go to a brain surgeon or a gynecologist? They're both medical doctors. Get the point.
Reply:Nah... let your dentist do it!

Orthodontist.. naturally are going to be more expensive, thats their speciality.

Your dentist, has the creditals... he has to. A General Dentist, can not do braces on anyone without the proper schooling. More and more dentist are doing braces nowadays, so they can get that extra cash! It doesnt mean, he'll be bad at it just because its not his speciality. Trust me, he had to have training/schooling in it, just like all those others did.
Reply:well it all depends on how much money you want to spend and the quality you want. I took my child to an orthodontidt and the price is alot more sensible than other places ive been. he has to wear them for 2 years and I can pay by the month. 1$120.00 a month thats really good deal.
Reply:Do not let the ortho fool you my dentist does some peoples braces if they are not extremely bad plus it is cheaper and it comes out with the same results and I have had no trouble with a regular dentist doing my braces so let your child decide which person he/she is more comftorable with.

Hope this helps.
Reply:orthedontist
Reply:yes definitly
Reply:Orthodontist-----two reasons---- FIRST, a specialist will have more tools and experience, not to mention the assistants having more experinece as well, as they do most, and I mean most of the work. SECOND, he will have more time. When a regular dentist does ortho, his schedule is limited for this as he has his regular schedule going on, vs, ortho they do this all day long every day.
Reply:Use the orthodontist...the dentist's plan maywork, but an orthodontist can probably do it faster, less painful, or he will propbably be able to answer your question more acuratley
Reply:it is definitely worth the extra money. Actually any amount is worth it to improve a child's self esteem. An orthodontist would know more than a dentist. Good luck
Reply:You should see an orthodontist. Orthodontists specialize in fixing teeth/malocclusions. They are versed in the newest and latest treatments to make your smile perfect. The cost of going to an orthodontist is expensive, but it is worth it in the long run. If you do not take care of your teeth, it can cause serious problems and cause you more money and trouble in the long run. I would go to an orthodontist and get a consultation. You can ask other mothers and fathers who their child is seeing and consider seeing their orthodontist. If you start your child young, your orthodontist can coordinate a plan with your dentist and work together to get your child the best smile.
