Do you think my orthodontist should be able to do this?

okay.

my orthodontist said that if i break my braces 3 or more times he will start charging me for the breakages. i have had 2 breakages already, but they werent my fault because i was doing everything that he told me to do.

breakages:

1. the wire going to my molar has a gap because i got a tooth pulled, they didnt tighten my wire so the wire came undone and broke. (they counted that as a breakage even when they did tell me that it was their fault.

2. One of the four front teeth on the bottom was to far back and the bracket and wire kept poping off, and again the told me it was their fault but they still counted it.

when we first went to the orthodontist he told me that he would only charge me it i broke all three of them. (and i know that he isnt just keeping count, because he tells me everytime i go in that i only have one more breakage for the next two years)

Your orthodontist is trying to get you to be more careful with your wires and brackets so you don't extend your time in ortho. He can charge if he wants, but it's mostly a scare tactic to get your attention.

Sometimes it's our fault but most times it's the patients, and most of you know it is but wouldn't dare admit it! Oh come on, we're not dummies, we know and its usually because most of us have had braces our selves.

Just try to be more careful, every time you break something, it really sets you back since the tooth isn't activated when the bracket is off or the wire breaks and it sets us back when we have to work you in to fix it. Take care of them so you will have a beautiful smile to be proud of! Good luck with your ortho!

Additional information: Do you seriously want me to believe they are putting "broken wires and brackets on" and then accusing you of breaking them? I don't think any of my patients ever accused me of that one. You may want to stop or be careful of the gum, candy, biting into foods is another one, cut everything up even pizza and hamburgers, pulling on the wires when you floss (I hope you floss) which can cause the brackets to pop off and bend the wires especially at the openings where you are missing teeth. Maybe some of this sounds familiar and will help you to realize that you may be putting some stress on your ortho that shouldn't be placed on it. Just tell your orthodontist that you are trying hard not to break anything and maybe they can give you some other pointers or start looking for stronger cement for your brackets. Good luck!
Reply:tell him this and if he still chooses to act the fool and continue to count the breakages against you then just get another orthodontist you could also look up you legal rights or his policy if there is a limit then check out the amounts times you could break you braces in the given time period you could also check out the policies of other orthodontists in your area.
