Calling all Orthodontist!....Figure 8?

Today my orthodontist said he was going to do a figure 8 on me today. What he did was take 2 wires and wrap them around the wire or something and then kept on twisting it.....but i was wandering what the point of that was....and what it did. (also...is it suppose to hurt?)

Thank You

Calling all Orthodontist!....Figure 8?
A figure-8 tie pulls the wire very tightly into the bracket. That, combined with a flexible wire will straighten out your rotated teeth.

Sometimes it will hurt a little more than usual because it is putting more pressure on the individual tooth than you are accustomed to.
Reply:A figure 8 is simply meant to hold the teeth in the position that they are. A steel ligature is used to do this, which is what your dentist twisted. Steel ligatures are stronger than elastic ties and are also used to move teeth when tied on each individual tooth but not when figure 8ed. Also no the figure 8 really does not hurt.
