Went to the orthodontist a couple of days ago to have my teeth checked for braces.
She said that I would have to have 4 pre molers removed, the 4th tooth from each side of my mouth. She said that the reason for this was that my mouth was too small, my teeth too big.
The problem I have is that she did not look at the x-ray preformed to look at my teeth structure, she simply did a check up on my mouth and said 4 teeth gotta go.
Can that decision be made without the consultation of an x-ray?
Also are braces really worth the hassle, some people I have spoken to say that they still have gaps in between there teeth after braces were removed?
Orthodontist hasty?
Get a second opinion, but also know that to make the assessment your Orthodontist did does not require x-rays to make that decision. If there were teeth that had not erupted yet or you were missing some teeth then yes, the x-ray would tell her where they are if they are still under the gum.
Before the Orthodontist does any "real" treatment plan, they will want a Panorex (x-ray of all your teeth), a Cephalometric xray(x-ray of the side of your head), molds/models of your teeth, photographs, wax bite, etc and this is to do a true work-up of your specific case.
Most Orthodontist can take a quick peek and give you a brief description without all the x-rays, but when you decide to really go for the treatment they will give a well thought out plan for you.
BTW the only reason for people to have spaces after they have their braces off is:
#1- They didn't wear their retainers like they were suppose to or
#2- They did not comply with treatment during braces and had their braces removed early
Other than that there should be no other reason for spacing problems and if there are, they should have gone back to the Orthodontist immediately.
Reply:Dude the thing is my brother went thru this braces process when he was 25 yrs old and his mouth was small and there was just no space for the teeth to space out, the doctor had to remove 4 of his teeths but before doing the extraction an x ray is made out for sure ur doctor knows wats shez doing half way or shez an expert but still no doctor wud go ahead without an x ray.
My brother had to bear the braces for a period of 2 and half yrs but it was all worth it. His teeth got wellspaced with no gaps remaining in case of those who r left with gaps must have been to bad doctors for the best doctor will see to it that the teeths align in a line and do not bang on one another that is the upper teeth with the lower ones. Upper Front teeths are slightly, very slightly forward then our lower front teeths.
A good Orthodontist will take his/her time and ask u to follow the guidelines and the care which has to be taken.
Initially my brother wud never laugh freely as he had his canines coming from above and he ended up looking like a dracula lol so he was very very conscious of this and he was so determined to get his teeth in shape that he decided to go thru this process even at 25 yrs of age, now he is one confident guy who can laugh as much as he wants to and hez a very jovial person with loads of friends so for him it used to be a big dilemma but now all is so good. No gap remains unless ur teeths r way too away from one another, but even then with the right pressure and the directional pull of the braces it can be overcome and thus u can have a good set of teeth with no gap inbetween.
So if possible, go to a very good Orthodontist, enquire and find out who is the best in ur area and go for the best braces. The process is costly if u want ceramic braces which r almost not visible. but u'll have to endure the pain which isn't much if ur determined to go thru the ordeal for the outcome will be so much sweeter.
I wish u luck and hope u will get thru it nicely. Patience and care is the key in this. Lol my brother was warned against having pizzas but he had them and also ended up breaking his braces but then he went and got it fixed too. The other alternate method he did was made bite size pieces of pizza and had them after he broke his braces lol but he didn't stop eating his favourite stuff lol he even had crabs...but he took great care in keeping his teeth and braces clean. His mouth used to be clean not like other people who have braces but when they open their mouth u end up looking at yellow teeth and plaque or a very unclean mouth.
Proper care means cleanliness to the max. Best luck and cheers.
