Going to the orthodontist..?

I have to make one more appointmet to the dentist to get a couple of caviities filled and then I will be making my first visit to the orthodontist because I need braces.

How many appointments will it take for him to get me braces?

I heard I will need things like brackets and spacers. I'm not exactly sure what these are. Anyway, is getting braces a long process?

How long after your first orthodontist appointment did you guys get braces? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Going to the orthodontist..?
first you get spacers.

4-6 weeks later, you get your braces on, usually. the doctor might do some other things first but i would say 2 or 3 appointments.
Reply:after i went to the first orthodontist appointment, i got my braces on the second or third appointment.. they dont take long to put it on thoo.. it probably lasts for 30-45 minutes.. I forgot. Well, once you get your braces, the first week will really hurt bad!! Soo you should eat like mashed potatoes, spaghetti, soup.. anything soft brackets are the little square things.. u know? and spacers are like a little special rubber band that they put in the back of your teeth, to make space so they can put someting in there.. hope it helped! :]
Reply:I had braces for four years. For me, I had a cemented in retainer first. There was so much metal it looked like it came from a Marylin Manson video. Then after that I had a spacer, which you have a key to and crank it every so many times. That was painful. I definitely suggest motrin or some drugs for that. lol

The length of the process all depends on how crooked your teeth are. Also, brackets need to be cemented on each indivdual tooth and it has to be VERY dry or the cement won't hold. So that could make issues as far as time length goes.

However, this all depends on your Dentist. Sometimes they will cement brackets and do not attatch a wire until your next appointment. So it all varies I suppose.

Hopefully that helps!

Good luck!

Reply:first u get spacers placed...4 each on teh upper and lower set...placed between premolars and molars i think...slightly painful for few days..

2 weeks later u get the braces...each part (known as a bracket) is stuck onto teh tooth using cement...special bands r placed on each 1st molar tooth on either side of teh jaw...the wire runs along the spaces in teh brackets and the wire is held in place by modules (resembling rubber bands)...depending on ur case there may be modifications in brackets (springs maybe present in case of crowding)...ideally a dentist does the upper jaw first and then schedules the lower jaw a week later...there will be pain especially during eating for the first week after the braces r attached...

the complete treatment lasts for a yr atleast with monthly visits and adjustments...
Reply:I am actually in the process of getting braces. I had my first appt two weeks ago and I am getting 4 teeth extracted next week. My orthodontist wants me to wait 2 weeks so my gums will heal and then I will get spacers. Spacers are like really small rubber banders that slide down between teeth to make room for when you get braces. These are usually kept on for a week or two and then you get braces. Here are a few links that should help.

Reply:well, it takes a while cuz they have to take pics of ur teeth and have ur parents pay some of the money. spacers will what u will get when u start ur treatment for ur teeth. they put them in between ur teeth to spread them out so ur teethy can have the room for braces. then they have to get some moldings done for ur teeth so they can order in the braces. o and the spacers will make ur teeth sore for a while. then they wiil put ur braces on. i suggest when u get them to start practicing how u talk cuz it may be aqward for a while. once again ur teeth will be sore again and u may have trouble eating but u will get used to it.trust me when u get ur braces off u will have a beautiful smile it will be worth it trust me.
Reply:Each patient has a different treatment schedule, i want to be an orthodontist so when i worked for one the last couple years i learned that EVERYONE needs different things.

you will learn the basics at your first appointment which will more than likely be an introductory appointment, ask lots of questions there if you have them

A palette expander is what the girl was talking about with the key and turning, it is to make space (but is not a spacer)

a spacer is a smaller rubberband that is stretched between your molars to open up space to place bands without causing pain

a bracket is what is actually glued to each individual tooth. there are different proceedures to apply brackets and different orthodontists use there preferred method..

i have braces now....good luck
