2. what are some good colleges for becoming an orthodontist?
3. what should i major in?
4. do you have to pay alot of money for insurance?
5. do you make more if you start your own practice? and if you do how much does it cost to start it?
thank you so much.
Orthodontist?
The road to becoming an orthodontist is a long one...here's a natural progression:
4 years of college (good majors are usually something science based)
4 years of dental school
2-3 years orthodontic residency
Getting into dental school and orthodontic residencies is very competitive. It is very important to have excellent grades in college and high admission test scores. When looking at colleges, see if the schools offer pre-dental programs/clubs/advising. The main focus for someone in college is to get into dental school. Then you have to be in the top of your dental school class to get into orthodontics.
As far as practicing orthodontics, most orthodontists who have been in practice for more than five years tend to have salaries in the six figure range. Salaries usually vary whether you're in a city or rural setting, how big your practice is, if you have multiple locations, etc..
I am assuming you are wondering about malpractice insurance. Fortunately it is fairly low for orthodontics.
Right now it costs about $500,000 to $800,000 to start up a practice. You don't necessarily make more starting your own practice. Other options you have are to work for another orthodontist or to buy the practice of someone who wants to retire.
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become an orthodontist, but the career is way more rewarding than looking at the money. Helping people improve their appearance and their self-confidence really makes me feel good about what I do. I absolutely love going to work and I think I'm in the best profession in the world.
Reply:I'm a dentist.
When you look at all of the different kinds of doctors (internist, pediatrician, neurosurgeon, dermatologist, dentist, oral surgeon, etc. etc.), orthodontists are probably the highest-paid when you consider the number of hours they work and the difficulty of their job.
Orthodontics is a very easy job, period. Orthodontists who are well into their practice rarely work 40 hours a week. They almost never deal with emergencies that require them to see patients in the evening or weekends, don't perform any high-risk procedures, don't perform any work that requires much manual dexterity.
Also, conceptually, orthodontics is a simple discipline, especially when compared to some of the medical professionals (neurosurgeons, CT surgeons) who might make as much as orthodontists (or more) while working far more hours.
Like I said, when you factor in the number of hours, degree of difficulty, level of responsibility, orthodontists are the highest-paid medical professionals out there.
